P PP Mguire New member Apr 27, 2007 #5 Im kinda confused. AMD got rid of the southbridge and Intel didnt right? If thats so, then why is their southbridge activly cooled whereas the northbridge isnt? If im mistaken please correct me.

H Ham New member Apr 27, 2007 #6 Because the NB has a big fat passive cooler on it and the SB has a crappy little flat one. And therefore needs a fan.

No, AMD chipsets have a southbridge as that's typically what does SATA/USB etc. Some of the typical northbridge functions (memory controller) are now in the AMD CPUs though.
