Devestated: Computer screwed :(

My computer dreams have been stopped. Why? I screwed up my PC.

Couldnt get it to start so I took it to the PC shop.

Got a call today. The motherboard wont power on, it is broken. Phoned back to get specifics and was told the heatsink wasnt on properly. When you tryed to power on you may have f**ked your processor. I am checking now ...

I am absolutely devastated. Anyone building a PC with little experience, DONT!

Hey, sorry about that mate.

I knew nothing about building pc's when I joined. I took my time and was careful, read instructions and away I went.

See if you can RMA the processor, say it was DOA... Then be more careful ;)

if that is the case, then your motherboard will probably be fine. its just a case of RMA'ing the cpu and crossing your fingers.

dont let it put you off building, just dont rush into things so fast and read lots before you do it yourself.

Where abouts are ya mate? If your near me I'd happily take a quick look at it and make sure you don't get stiffed

Don't trust most computer shops, they usually know sod all

I am near crewe. So probably as far from each other as possible. But I really do appreciate the offer.

So I jut got a call back. Apparently he is testing evrything on another system. He says the cpu is running fine on another board at 28oc, so is the ram etc

I.E All is not lost.

I have sent off for a refund on the mobo so this may be rectifiable.

The only mobo he has in stock that he could use right no is an Asus P5N 32-E SLI+ which will cost me £100

Alternatively I can just wait and order another mobo.

I am going on holiday on saturday hence I wanted this done before then, but if that mobo int good, I am not going to rush into this.

As for instructions, I read the instructions very toroughly and spent at least 3 hours putting it together :D Jut not right LOL

What does rma actually mean?

Should I get the Asus P5N 32-E SLI+ he offers, or should I go for the ABIT everyone previously suggested?

The P5N is a pretty good board. A few of the guys here have ti so they shud be able to give you 1st hand experiences when they come across this thread.

Hmm Ok, I am even more annoyed now. I took the PC in as I had set it up and said can you have a look fix it if it is wrong. They said yup £15. Now the mobo is broken so either I supply a new one, or they do. Phoned them back and they said it'd cost me more like £45 for a full build once I get the mobo... Is that reasonable?

Any more opinions on ordering the ABIT/ or getting the ASUS now?

Thanks

£45 is probably not far off the going rate for rebuilding a PC, however imo it's well over the top. Anyone who knows what they are doing can put together a PC in under 15 minutes. £45 for 15 mins work??...pffff

I'd offer to help ya, but I'm probably just as far away in Essex :/

That's daylight robbery. If you decide to get the P5N just bear in mind that it has been known to be fickle with some makes of RAM

See I aint sure what to do here. I have no real experience putting together a PC.. When I tried it didnt work... but paying £45. Thi was meant to be a buget PC, and what will blow the budget is getting it built.

Any Suggestions? Any members who know what they are doing near Crewe/Nantwich?

Do you trust the shop? Do you know others that have good luck with them?

If not I would say "I didnt have enough money" and ask for my stuff back. Than go on vacation and enjoy yourself....

When you get back we can help you to get back and running.

(seems to me they already made 1 big mistake so I dont trust them myself)

If the board was brand new and the heatsink was not attached properly...return it. Not your fault. I too was a complete n00b. Just stick at it and read up and ull b fine. Ask for it back and go on holiday. Then we'll help you out a bit further such as clearing cmos, checking cables etc.
