Several developers have criticized the concept of the PS4.5/ PS4K, saying that a "flies in the face of the purpose of consoles" and that some developers will refuse to "develop around it".

They may as well bite the bullet and call it the PS5, even before any of the current gen consoles came out I was thinking it would be a short lived generation due to them being so underpowered.

Well it makes sense doesn't it? Why would you want to make two versions of the same game for the same platform?? I'd be angry too!

They are already doing it though, in fact they are making the games for the same platform 3 times over since they make the game for platform x and then "port" it to the other 2 platforms.

Developers don't make the game for each specific platform, they will make one version and then tweak it based of what the platform they are working on can cope with.

Or at least that is my understanding, so if there is a Playstation 4.5 or what ever they call it if it exists, is not as big a deal for developers but actually it's more of a big deal for the consumers.

There are potentially people who want to buy a PS4 but with this rumor running around they may be holding off.

Sony need to confirm whether this thing exists or not, instead of just letting the rumours float around potentially hurting there bottom line.

Adding another thing to "port" still costs time and money.. also the fact that it's still two versions of the same game for a single platform, PS4 and PS4k. It's a big deal for both consumers and devs. Just going to increase costs(or more DLC) and anger consumers who already have PS4's. Or for those who aren't even aware of this. Imagine they buy a PS4 towards the end of summer, then couple months later they find out a new PS4 came out that's more powerful? I'd want my money back or get a free upgrade if I was that person.

They won't have another thing to "port" though... If the reports are as stated... they won't have to create two versions of the game for the PS4 and PS4.5 because games that run on the 4.5 can still be ran on the original PS4. Maybe some extra development time may be needed because of the slight upgrade in specs but from what I've read all over... they won't be treated as two different consoles but they will still run all the same games and it's a upgrade that isn't required to enjoy all the latest games.

If the architecture is the same just with slight upgrades then not much more will need to be done. This is done every generation. When they release a slim version or a newer smaller version of the console... usually small upgrades are also made to the power efficiency as well as the CPU and GPU. It just so happens that now everyone is so concerned with specs that all this extra information is becoming top page news making people think that this is a reason to be concerned.

I haven't got the link to hand but on another site they were saying there would have to be two versions of the game on the disk, one for 4 and one for 4k (PlayStation 4 Neo apparently) It will also be able to upscale content which is good for anyone with a 4k tv and rubbish terrestrial broadcasts.

So it's not just their usual half life shrinkage/slim version with minor updates it's quite a change to the power.

I think this "slight upgrade" can delay a release by months or Devs could pull a UBISOFT or WarnerBros, skip QA and just release a disasterous version. Such a plan would mean the 4.0 version would have to be delayed in order to release in sync with the 4.5 version, meaning loss of revenue, money which they need to claw back from spending extra in development.

Think about what you're saying and what is known about this right now...
* "No games will be made specifically for the upgraded console"
* "All purchases made with PS4 can be transferred to the updated system"
If no games are made specifically for this console then why do they need another version of the games?

This 4K version is a response to what they stated back in 2014 about the PS4 not supporting 4K video content but they are looking into ways of either bringing a 4K model to the shelves or possibly allowing 4K streaming to the console. I'm thinking they found that impossible with the current hardware so upgraded it to support 4K but to prevent it being a pointless upgrade they made some changes to help the frame rate of the PS4 games as well.

It's not a entirely new CPU and GPU. From what I've read... these are improvements on what they already had not entirely new architecture... so developing for them shouldn't take too much more time but we won't know till Sony officially releases information and developers actually start working on games with the new dev kit. Right?

Plus I think developers need to start pushing back their games anyway to prevent the bull that comes with bad coding. Example: The Division... The game is so broken even after pushing it back but that's a conversation for another day.

This isn't new architecture... not a new CPU and / or GPU. It's a upgrade from what Sony has already built upon so if they do this correctly then it shouldn't take that much extra time to develop for the PS4.5 since it's supposed to work along side the PS4 with no exclusives to either with all games working on both. We honestly won't know till this is confirmed and the upgraded console is confirmed.

I get the feeling their NEO project is not for 4k screens, but optimise usage on its upcoming VR gear. Aren't they intending to release them together or near same release date?

Agreed. I don't think 4k gaming will be mainstream (even on PC) for a couple of years yet. this will probably be more for vr and 4k video with up-scaling capabilities.

It's more for upscaling current content - same as some bluray players will upscale to 4k and some won't. Same as DVD's prior.

@Chatoik - I"ll look for that source but it definitely said two versions on one disc Now whether the information is accurate is another thing entirely... it is all speculation and rumour at this stage.

In answer to your points.

  • No games will be specifically made for this version - means no "PS4K only titles"
  • All purchases can be transferred "yes backwards compatible it is"
Edit - this annoys me "Think about what you're saying and what is known about this right now..." No need for it - it comes across as quite condescending. Maybe I took it the wrong way?

Should i even bother to reply to this...

1)You say they won't be treated like two different consoles.. but also say they will spend time focusing on the slightly upgraded version.. that is essentially treating it as a second version.
2) Don't know what you been reading.. but none of what you say is true
3) If you even bothered to read this article, you'd know what was said
the GPU has a double the GPU cores with almost a 14% overclock, which gives the PS4 Neo around 228% more GPU performance than the PS4, not accounting for any performance gains from using a new GPU architecture.

4) No upgrades are taken place in slim consoles. Slim console versions only obtain the increased efficiency(perf/watt, power draw decrease) through the use of taking the original design down to a smaller process node. For example PS3 going from 65nm(iirc) down to 45nm(or was it 40nm?). Nothing else was changed. No increased clocks, no increased memory, no increased anything outside HDD space/speed and(or if) blu ray drive changes.

5) Even if you don't agree with anything else I said, the fact remains it is a big deal. If it wasn't then Devs wouldn't be openly critical about it.

I simply missed the part about new architecture but at the end of the day this is a rumor so how Sony handles this is what matters if any of the information is true that is.

We are having a conversation... don't take things any kinda way dude. I was simply telling you to read the article. -_-

As was I to you, any article in fact. You said you read more than one. Well every single one I have read or found states the same thing. So maybe it's more along the lines of you reading... Also please don't double post. Against the rules and all
