Right its time to decide :p

Please vote for which you would deem as the perfect monitor for me:

  • I play games mostly
  • Sometimes watch movies
  • Want a widescreen with as much difference from my 17" as possible
  • Dont want to spend loads of money on something, when something cheaper could make me just about as happy
  • A nice warranty - dont want my investment getting owned and not being able to have it replaced
  • I'm on £20 a week, already have the money for a monitor but I will need to build ££ back up, so make unnecessary spending a no-go
  • Need to get something better than my 16ms 17" monitor - its too non-widescreen and looks tiny in front of my case

A good retailer would be helpful too :)

samsung 205bw vote here,i love mine and i would reccomend it and especially since its so cheap now, would be a god monitor for your 'requirements';)

Raging.

"Out the window are luxuries like the inbuilt USB hub and older connections like S-video and composite but vitals like the 1680 x 1050 native resolution and DVI with HDCP remain. Furthermore, the E207WFP boasts a lightening quick 5ms response time which makes mincemeat out of the 2007WFP’s 16ms rating.

Yet the most impressive thing about Dell’s lean and mean new screen (I’m a poet and I didn’t even know it) is the quite frankly remarkable $289 (£155) sticker price. We don’t yet know if/what compromises have been made in the panel to achieve such a breakthrough cost or what its European mark up with be, but if Dell can make us half as happy as it did with the 2405FPW or the 2407WFP then this could be a decisive moment in bringing large LCDs to the general public."

apparently its stripped down but it bares near enough the same price tag with a smaller responce time though :)

the belinea 102030W doesn't have a DVI connection, only VGA.

the 102035W has DVI tho, but does not support HDCP

i'd check the types of panels used in the monitors as the type will affect the viewing angles, colour reproduction etc.

IPS is supposed to be pretty much the closest to CRT image quality, but they are usually the most expensive.

MVA/PVA, panels are next with pretty good viewing angles

TN panels are the oldest technology, they are the cheapest and have the worst viewing angles of all (read: they're crap)

this link may be of some use to you:

i had a belinea 102035W before this dell 2407 and i was quite pleased with the image quality and contrast levels.

when i was looking for a monitor at the time, the closest model i could find that also had an MVA panel inside was a viewsonic, but that was around £50 more expensive

[edit] just a quick note, the belinea did not come with a DVI cable included, but to be perfectly honest, i could not tell the difference between the VGA and the DVI when i purchased the cable

apparently if the monitor has a decent analogue convertor, then there will be very little difference in picture quality

[edit2] the best monitor to meet your requirements that i can see in that list would be the dell 2007 with an IPS panel, DVI connection and HDCP support, most of the others use the older TN panels

Well dude, as long as its a really nice picture which allow me to put this card and future beast cards to good use i'll be happy. A good quality image and warranty are surely all people look for.

I dont need extra usb crap etc. if that narrows it down

i'd say the dell or the belinea to be honest as all the others use older technology TN panels, just depends on how badly you need hdcp support

dells warranty is pretty good, 4 years and they'll come replace the monitor next business day

maxdata (who make belinea screens) offer a 3 year warranty and a 48 hour swap policy

Not sure if you'll notice a huge difference with a 20" against your 17" though, cos i think the actual screen size is only a little taller but much wider, and the res of most of these screens is 1650x1080 compared to your 17" res of 1280x1024 so you can see it'll not be a huge jump for some games that don't support widescreen. The most difference you'll notice is widescreen movies though which'll be around 2x larger!

Your best bet is to go for a 22" imo for the most difference.

22" Dell FTW, proboly the best quality along with size, of course u will spend more h/e it def benifits it and you wont regret it. if u can just go to a store where they sell monitors and look @ the difference between a 20"-22"

I voted for 2007wfp as if you'r going to spend £280 u might aswell get a 20" S-IPS panel rather than get a 22" TN panel. Also the 2007wfp has loads of ports for connectivity :)

If you go for a Belnea 20", go for the "10 20 35 W" as it has DVI and is a MVA panel

If you want the size but don't mind TN panels, the belnea 22" looks ok (altho it has no DVI, v7 22" does).

I deffinately wouldn't look at the Dell 22" as it's overpriced for TN.

i agree with TN for the viewing angles @ around 10-15ft, i believe mine is a TN 22"Westinghouse, and i dont sit 10-20 ft away playing games.. at a 35 or 45 degree angle. TN monitors are fine, if u want "the movie" experience with ur family or friends TN is not the way to go, but for gaming and viewing a movie for ur ownself is fine.

I'm literally sat less than a metre away from my screen

just behind my saitek there ^^

my cautiousness is due to the fact im spending a lot of money here, expecting a high quality for my money (minus the tack i wont use much) and trying to get the biggest screen for my money without sacrificing precious precious image quality. My 17" tn screen is just fine (viewing angle etc.) but it lacks vibrance and size. I wont be lying on the floor watching my screen, im pretty much in line with it. So what you think now, and thanks guys

If you're sat in front of it and don't really care that much about colours (photoshop work etc) then the 22" TN panels would probably do as they are the same price as the 20" TN's :) you gain some extra size for the same price at least. Not sure if you're bothered about futureproofing by buying a DVI one or not tho :)

The video7 22" is quite good for the price as it has both DVI+VGA. Not sure if the Mirai one does or not as I've never heard of the company, but I know the Belnea one is VGA only.

i'd still have to say the 2007wfp if you want a great image together with hdcp over dvi

or the belinea 102035w for again, really good image quality with bright colours and good contrast but minus hdcp

I will need it to last as long as possible (im one of them folk). Will i see a difference while gaming if i did go for a tn panel? Me no like my current one while playing games such as fear, the contrast is so crap ive gotta have it high brightness to see anything...which defeats the point of having a dark scene.

So yea basically im a gaming mofo, might start using photoshop etc. once im at college
