Some people enjoy the exploration aspects and the fact that it doesn't lead you by the hand down a pre-determined path.

In many ways, the game is like Legend of Zelda, though the story isn't told as well and the difficulty is cranked up to insane levels.

There's a weak plot and some interesting quests related to NPCs. The lore is the big part of the game, not the plot itself. Moreover, the difficulty of the game is HIGHLY overrated. It's not a hard game, it just takes some time to get into the mechanics. On the other hand, DS1 PvP kinda sucks
