Crossblade Ranger vs Crosshair Formula

For christmas I'm planning to get my dad a new motherboard to get him started on his new build. He is a long time Asus and AMD fan. I'm split on whether I should go to FM2+ or AM3+. It's really mostly a looks and sort of a performance thing. My dad wants to do an ROG red and black themed custom loop but the Crosshair is red black and white. He would most likely prefer the looks of the Crossblade better but I'm not sure if it's worth the tradeoff of the extra modules.

He probably won't notice the difference between a 7850K and an 8350 since he'll overclock either of them to hell anyway and he doesn't game at all. He's just building it because he can and he wants something to toy around with.

Am3+ and get him the Crosshair Formula Z, as thats red and black.

I assume he will be using a dedicated GPU? You choice is really between the Athlon 860K and the Fx-8350, no point wasting money on the integrated GPU if you are not using it.

He will be using a dedicated GPU. I'm aware that the 860K is a 7850K with the on die graphics disabled. I would still get the 7850K anyway since it's not that much more to him and in case one of his cards fails or he wants to sell and swap out, he'll have the onboard graphics to fall back onto. Also I'm quite aware of the Formula Z as its the board I'm comparing to the Ranger.

I think he would be better off with the A88X Gamer by ASUS and an Athlon. The board looks just as pretty as the crossblade at least I like it more than the crossblade..., it's also going to be overally cheaper
