CPUIdle: cooling your CPU via software

CPUIdle Extreme is a software that will cool down your CPU without the need of Heatsink or any hardware.

The CpuIdle Approach

Under normal circumstances the CPU isn't always active but spends much time waiting for the keyboard, harddisk or CD-ROM. What would be more logical than to turn off the CPU for that period? That's exactly what the HLT machine instruction (Opcode F4) does. Whenever the CPU encounters a HLT instruction the clock is halted and the CPU enters suspend mode until an interrupt, NMI, or reset happens. With the advent of power saving microprocessors like the Cyrix Cx486S the HLT instruction elicits an additional benefit. When "Suspend on HLT" is enabled in the configuration register the processor not only stops on HLT but also enters the power saving suspend mode.

CPUIdle Extreme has been released on 01.10.2006 and apparently get very good reviews and critics and is considered as the Swiss Army Knife of overclockers!

Check for more info at:

I am trying this right away and will let you know how it works on my D830

First report for CPUIdle: Apparently my Pentium D 830 is not correctly recognized, it said it is a D 830 but as 2 celeron prescott. Frequency is correct though 3GHz.

As for MotherBoard Monitor, my shuttle SD31P mobo is not listed in the supported mobos! Anyway I am monitoring the temps with Everest Ultimate Edition. No drastic decrease in the temps so far. Will update situation after a couple of hours idle.

Hasn't this software been out for YEARS?

I remember using it on my P3600. I thought it didnt have any effect on modern CPU's as they can manage their temps much better.

The extreme edition has just been released but the original soft is pretty old yes and indeed after a couple of hours idle, I don't see any significant decrease with CPUIdle compared to without!

I used to use this with my AMD 2100+ Palomino which runs very hot. It worked but it sometimes interefered with things like the internal ADSL modem syncing - so I turned it off and got some silver thermal compound instead.
