CPU and OS

Hello guys.
I am bit of a noob, so I am a little bit puzzled with windows OS being 32 and 64 bit. As far as I know 64 bit is necessary in order to fully utilize 4 core cpus. But how about intel i3 which only have 2 cores? Does it matter that they have 4 threads? Which system should I get for a rig with i3 cpu?

64 bit. So you can use more than 3gb of ram. 32bit windows can only use around 3gb of ram whereas 64bit can use alot more.

Like barnsley said above go for 64bit. There's really no reason for 32bit unless you have a few applications on your PC that must be run on 32bit.

Don't worry though. 64bit Windows can still run 32bit apps. Just not vice versa.

I am a little bit confused with 32 and 64 bits. What are the advantages of having 32 bit system, unless you have apps that have such requirement? Is it preferred to run 32 bit system on a pc with little amount of ram and 2 core cpu on board? Is it going to make the pc run smoother?

I believe some old processors aren't 64 bit compatible. Aside from that and the above reason I can't see any need for a 32bit OS

IMO its better to buy 64 bit version of the OS cause you could upgrade the memory later on, if you brought a 32 bit version of the OS you would end up being limited in the long run, i used to run an i3 system with 64 bit version but if other people say just to get the 64 bit version of the OS you would be better off

32-bit : "Easier" on RAM capacity requirements and it's more compatible with pre-Vista drivers/programs.
May be faster in 32-bit only aplications.

64-bit : Necessary for taking advantage of 4GB+ RAM PC's and 64-bit programs.
64-bit code can be A LOT faster than 32-bit one.
64-bit OS also has better memory menagement system but will require bit more RAM for itself.

Multi-Core CPU do NOT correspond with "bits" in OS or it's requiremets.
Win7 64-bit can be run on Pentium 4 Prescott CPU's (with 64-bit instuctions enabled).

Multi Core performance is more a "OS core" thing :
For example : Since Win XP wasn't coded to take maximum advantage of more than 2 cores/threads (for that U got Win Server Edition), switching to Win 7 will give U a performance boost on CPU side, despite latter OS being more of a resource hog.
But that doesn't mean XP can't handle a 4+ threaded/cored processor - it can.
It's just CPU will not be ale to reach it's peak performance on OS that old.
