Could AMD Be The First To Ship 8-Core CPUs?

It seems that AMD is planning to follow the strategy of rival Intel by sticking two of their upcoming quad-core CPUs on one die and calling it an 8-core CPU. More in the news article

Does it follow that u put 2 processors on 1 die, it takes almost 2ce the power ? (something u guyz could answer now I guess with x2/c2d)

Similarly if u take 8 processors and put on 1 die ?

Well kind of, but not in reality unless you have a program that really does well in taking into account all those cores. I think scaling is about 80%ish with a very well written app

I think in terms of a well written program, from a programmers pov, u just obey the rules as they stand.

In the same fashion as u allocate memory, u deallocate it when u`ve finished - which we all know doesn`t happen.

It's great that everyone is going core crazy, we need more apps to take advantage of 2/4 cores now, never mind 8 cores!

I'm with ham on the heat here - toasty!

Not clued up on the power consumption Rasta, but c2d's are very efficient, I saw a comparison of single core vs dual/quad for performace per watt... Multi cores performed better... I'll try find it but don't hold your breath
