copy os from hdd to ssd (stupid question)

In a previous post as you know I had some trouble with windows 8,
I was wondering since I have it running perfectly on the laptop could I clone the os to run on my desktop once built?.
will it also copy any software installed?
will I have to re enter the the windows key?


Now I will point out a few things.
1 no drivers are installed just the drivers being used bundled with 8
the dell laptop will go back to windows 7

Just do a fresh install of windows, it won't take long on a SSD and you could avoid a lot of hassle in the long run.

Acronis True Image is your best bet if you absolutely insist, but transferring an install from one machine to another is
A ) not a good idea, it won't have the correct driver files etc, won't be stable and
B ) probably against the EULA of the license you've purchased anyway
