Coolermaster ATC 500, Coating removal question

A few months ago I purchased a Coolermaster ATC 500 from an auction site, my original plan was to have the case anodised and to make a rather nice Project case.

When I received the case I found the side panels have some sort of coating, because of this the case has sat unused for some time, I think its about time to rectify this and find a way to clean the case up.

Can anyone recommend a plan of action?

My current plan is to either have the side panel’s plain aluminium or to have them anodised like originally planned. If I have them anodised this would mean the side panels would have to be 100% clean of all the coating, this would rule out sanding as the clips on the inside of the door that slide over the case chassis would be impossible to sand.

With that in mind I am currently thinking along the lines of a dip tank, or some sort of solvent to clean it up.

Anyone recommend a product or website of a place that may be able to help?

Any help or advice is much appreciated.

Hi Smurfy for me to anodise the case panels properly they have to be clean 100% aluminium. I cant anodise over paint or powder. The only option you have is to use paint stripper and get them back to their original condition. Alternatively if you know of a fabricator or panel worker in your area perhaps you could get some new panels made?

Hey Phil,

Any idea of what type of paint stripper would be sutable?

Anyone have any expeirnece in stripping paint from aluminium?

I should point out the case is infact a ATC's 310 and not the ATC 500 i said it was( my minds going).

Its a far bigger case.

Atcs 201c-sx1

Hey,

I have a 201-SX1 which i'm looking to do a similar thing with i want to remove the paint from the sides and top panels and either have them resprayed or possibly anodised.

Any advice on the best method of removing the paint, i've read using nitromores (sp?) but that would be hard going and messy so i was kind of hoping for a suggestion as to where i could go and get the panels dipped to remove all the paint

I'd personally use paint thinners, just buy a 5 litre can (~£7), and pour it onto kitchen towel/ rags on the panel. This should eat the paint off nicely :)

Could it not be easier to have the dodgy panels re-sprayed?

could you not use an orbital sanding wheel to strip the paint off? i use one to get light scratches out of my brushed aluminium v2000...
