CoolerMaster 690III Announced

Had a 690 II, didn't really like it.
Looked ok and seemed ok in theory, just didn't like it in practice.

The 690 III does look to be an improvement in just about every way though.

Can I ask what you didn't like about the II?

I thought it was perfect really.
Incredibly good for the price, and was very well built.

the extra height and width does wonders for watercooling options. with full support for two 240mm rads.

the new window design is also much more aesthetically pleasing, especially without that fan mount.

Only thing I didn't like about the 690 II was the lack of proper front intake. I see that the 690 III fixes this issue but...

Honestly, even though I think the outside looks really good, the design of the inside is dated. I mean, what's so hard about making 2.5" holes on the 3.5" drive sleds. The only thing they've done now is prevent the use of more 3.5" drives.

Also, no rubber grommets...What?

I don't think the II had any problems with intaking air. You could have the 140mm at the front, with the bottom HDD cage removed, and then 2 more 120s in the floor.

And you could support 2x 240mm rads in the I&II too.

Other than the slightly different front intake, the slightly different front and top plastic panels, and the HDD cages, there doesn't seem to be that much different

690 II ADV was my first "decent" case. Doesn't seem like they have change that much with the 690 III though to be honest. Looks like they have just taken the II, modernized it and added a I.

I'm sure it will still be a good case for the price, same as the II was. I'm sure there will be endless OEM versions of the III just like there's many OEM versions of the II

a lot of companies are going this route with the 2.5" only drive mounts, i personally don't understand it.

it does give extra room for graphics cards, but most cases with this type of mount is added to cases which have enough space for every gpu i could think off.

also it allows for far too many! who uses that many ssds or laptop sized HDD?

I thought sometimes the 690 II 'knock-offs' were better than the actual case. I was a big fan of the Nexus Prominent R with sound dampening materials, 2x120mm front intake, rubber grommets and modular HDD cages...

  • I didn't like that you lost so many drive bays by adding a bottom rad.
  • I didn't like that you could fit 2 x 140mm fans but not a 280mm rad.
  • The top rad was very limited in depth allowance.
  • There wasn't much room behind the motherboard tray, which didn't help cable management.
  • Fitting a 240mm rad in the bottom was quite limiting o nthe length of the PSU you could use.
  • The cover on the hot-swap SATA bay on the top was annoying, wish it was attached.
  • All the plastic felt cheap and like it might break at any minute.

Prefer both my HAF 932 and Silverstone TJ11.
Hope to like my Corsair 900D and Carbide 540 more (although a bit worried about them being plasticy)
The plastic was what really put me off the Switch 810, couldn't bear the look of it.
