Controlling case fans on NZXT H440?

Hey, was just wondering can any of you give me some help/advice.

This is my first build and so it is still a big learning curve for me.

My Build is
i7 6700k
Asus z170 pro
Strix Gtx 970
Corsair Vengance LED 16g DDR4http://www.komplett.ie/corsair-vengeance-led-16-gb-pc4-25600-dimm/80044734/details.aspx
Kracken x61 AIO
Hyper X SSD 240g, Hyper X SSD 120g ,WD 1TB HDD

I have an NZXT H440 case and I'm using the stock fans that came installed in it. This is 3 120 intake at the front and 1 140 exhaust at the back. I also have a Kracken x61 mounted at the top as suggested by NXZT.

All the fans are plugged into the fan hub in the back of the case. I can however control the Kracken fans with the CAM software. I have them running on silent mode (fan speed 25%) pretty much all the time as I dont do much gaming or anything that pushes the machine to hard. Temps seem to be good.

My question is about controlling the case fans. I think the exhaust fan is running harder than it needs to be. This is because the only option I have for the placement of the rig is at my side with the back facing me and i can feel a constant cold air coming from it. Also I think it may be running louder than it needs to be.

If i plug the fan, or new fan, into a header on the board will the mobo control it and let it run a bit slower?

This is what I get in my bios. even the water pump is showing up N/A and the water pump is plugged into the waterpump header on the board.

Thanks for any help

If Im not mistaken the Cam software will only control the Kraken the case fans will be controlled by the case fan speed controller if plugged into the fan hub
If there is no fan speed controller on your case you have a few options
1 You can plug them into the fan headers on your motherboard and control them through the bios
2 You could buy either an NZXT Grid+ or Sentry 3 to control the fans, the grid uses Cam the Sentry has touch controls
Hope this helps

thanks for the reply.

Do you know if i plug the fan straight into the mobo instead in the hub on the back of the case will the mobo control in automatically? IE speed up and slow down as needed.

I think it just running at a constant now because all the fans are plugged into the hub, there is no individual control so they are all running at the same speed.

Its handy alright having all the fans off the mobo, its clean and easy but if there is more control and better performance gained bu going into the mobo I would do that.

Also as you said, the NZXT Grid is an option. Im just weighing up all my options,

Thanks

I have not done this so I'm not 100% sure but if you plug them into the board they will remain static, if you need them to ramp up and use a profile you need to set one up yourself in the bios of your board
If you get the grid you can set the profiles within Cam and it will control them for you and the cabling is neater as you don't have them running from the board

Plug the rear fan into a header on your motherboard. Take note of the label by the header as this will make it easy to find in the BIOS.

Once this is done, jump in the BIOS and select the fan header that you have the fan plugged into.

From here, on most Motherboards, you will be able to select one of many fan curve profiles (Max, Silent etc.). Personally I would use silent for a rear exhaust if you are not really pushing the system.

Alternatively, you can set a custom curve or set the fan to run at a set voltage or percentage as a static value.

Is the fan a PWM fan or not? Is it a 3-pin or a 4-pin cable? If it's a 4-pin, controlling it from a motherboard header shouldn't be an issue.

Even with a 3 pin, you should be able to use the Qfan control on ASUS motherboards to just drop the voltage to reduce the speed

Thanks lads.

I might try plugging the rear fan into the mobo header and setting it to a low speed. Id say I will get away with that.

All I ever really run is Photoshop and Abelton. The odd game or two. Its not pushed way more often than not.

Im going to look into getting a RGB fan anyway so might just wait till then, plug the new one into the board

:D
