Considering returning my LGA2011 rig

Hi guys,

I retired my R3E i7 930 rig last Thursday and upgraded to the R4E Black Edition with an 4930K CPU. I've been struggling now since then to get my system working properly.

Randomly I can't access my network/internet on my Win 8.1 setup. I've tried everything. Reinstalled windows 5 times. CD drivers, online drivers, nothing works. There is no warning triangle over the network icon either and Windows Diagnostics can't find any issues. Over all, I feel I have a much poorer and slower OS with LGA 2011 than I did with 1366. Clearly this must be wrong.

Also, specific tools such as HWMonitor sometimes crashes on startup, or they simply can't retrieve any system information.

I'm using the following downloadable drivers from ASUS website:
  • Realtek Audio Driver V6.0.1.7058 for Windows 7/8/8.1 32bit & 64bit.(WHQL)
  • Intel Chipset Driver V9.3.2.1015 for Windows 7/8/8.1 32bit & 64bit.(WHQL)
  • Intel LAN Driver V18.5.54.0 for Windows Win8.1 32bit & Win8.1 64bit---(WHQL)
  • Intel AHCI/RAID Driver Path for Windows Win7 32bit & Win7 64bit & Win8 32bit & Win8 64bit & Win8.1 32bit & Win8.1 64bit.
  • Intel Rapid Storage Technology Driver software V12.8.0.1016 for Windows Win7 64bit & Win8 64bit & Win8.1 64bit---(WHQL)
  • Bluetooth Driver V12.0.0.7800 for Windows 8.1 32bit & 64bit.(WHQL)

I'm also using the latest Nvidia driver:
GEFORCE 332.21 DRIVER

Every other device in my home works fine. My laptop is also running Win 8.1 without any problems.

I've tried with 2, 4, and 8 sticks of memory. I've left everything to default, and I've also used XMP to get the proper speed/timings - this too makes no difference.

I've also left out the Corsair Link cable during installation to see if that makes any difference - which of course it didn't.

I've installed Windows 8.1 with the minimum amount of usb attachments - only keyboard and mouse attached. Again, no difference.

Any suggestions please?

Hi, yes, sorry. Latest BIOS of course! :)

Just finished my 7th installation now. Only Nvidia driver installed and LAN driver - as posted above. Worked 2 bootups, now on the third I'm back to no internet connection despite everything looks normal...

Then the newest drivers may have been corrupt or have bugs.. try updating one at a time but use one that you haven't already.. make sure its still w8 compatible though.

I'm considering going for Windows 8.0 instead of 8.1 to see if that makes any difference. But surely if this is a drivers problem, there should be tones of people out there with similar issues, right?

Yes, have installed driver by driver keeping everything to a bare minimum, and also updating where ever necessary, but this too fails.

try not installing the lan driver. I never bothered with my motherboard

Hi, tired that too unsuccessfully.

Have you tried the system with a single card?

You could also try testing you RAM with Memtest x86, if you haven't already.

Hi, running Memetest now. If all ok I'll try installing Windows 8.0. One or two cards shouldn't make any difference, but I'll go for one as well just to be sure, thanks.

That HWMonitor issue makes me think the motherboard could be faulty. Might be worth returning it cause you seem to have tried every software remedy. If it was just the network card, I wouldn't necessarily blame the mobo but with HWMonitor not being able to pick us up any info, that doesn't sound right.

Are your SSD's by any chance in Hot Swap bays?

I had a very similar issue with my Rampage IV Extreme where drivers would not install, and programs would crash etc for no reason at all.

My problem turned out to be the Hot Swap bay on the Switch 810 that I was using at the time, because as soon as I took my SSD out of the hot swap bay all of the issues went away.

Have you tried running without the raid array?

Are you using a USB Pen drive to install windows or a cd, as I had issues as well with installing windows off a USB pen drive and still have issues now if I try to install it that, way which is one of the reasons I still use a DVD drive.

Is the copy of Windows 8 a downloaded iso or a genuine Microsoft disk?

Have you got a spare ethernet card you can try?

Hi guys,

Thank you for all your great replies. Awesome forum! :)

My SSD's have been connected to both the SATA2 and SATA3 connectors just to be sure, but the problem still persisted. I've done an installation with the bare minimum components, like just one SSD and one GPU, but still no luck.

I've also done both Win 8.0 and 8.1, also with no luck.

However, I just learned that on the very same day I bought the 2011-kit, my cable modem got replaced. Girlfriend...
I've disabled the routing function and hooked up my old friend - the Netgear WNR3500L, and voilá – so far everything works like a charm. It looks like the modems internal router fucked up everything and for some reason locked up the computer. This only happened on cable, not wifi -> me not detecting/thinking of it earlier.

I’ve now got a fresh installation of Windows 8.1 Pro and everything works great – except for the Corsair Link for my H100i – which worked under 8.0. The beta drivers are really crappy.
The XMP profile also works like a charm and my RAM is running nicely at 2133MHz :)

Thanks again guys for everything!

Interesting that a modem caused all this...

Nonetheless your welcome!

I agree! I'm quite stunned by the whole experience. Took me a week to figure it out. However, I do have a drivers issue with the Corsair H100i. I have to manually disable and enable the "Integrated USB Bridge" under Devices and Printers, for the Corsair Link software to work. The driver is still in Beta and Corsair have no official statement when they will support Windows 8.1.
But I'll live... :)

On the other hand, letting loose all the immense powers of LGA2011 is an impressive sight!

Hi guys,

just wanted to let you know that I've been running my rig 24/7 with a 4.5GHz overclock now for 3 months, and it's a whopping fast system.
RAM is also great, but more importantly, my GTX 780 Ti's are amazing. Stock ASUS cards at 1110MHz

FireStrike Extreme: 10,253.

These are all daily settings I'm running. My goal is to watercool my rig, but I don't have the time right now to do this. Maybe later. Would be nice to try pushing the components a bit further.

I've had no problems with my network after I changes the router/modem. Again, thanks for all your support. :)

Finally, hooked up my Sony 4K tv and ran some stuff on it. Pretty amazing picture. It's a shame that Nvidia don't support HDMI 2.0 yet though.

Cheers

That to me sounds like an network attack. Being an IT Security Researcher makes me think about the IPv6 RA Packet Flood that can cause massive system stability issues and bring machines to it knees.
