Computer freezes randomly :(((

My computer (in the last few months) has started to 'lock up', what I mean by that is I will be using the computer and randomly it will just freeze, and I have to manually restart the computer. I have checked the events viewer but I really don't know what the problem is...I have attached a picture of the events viewer.

Any sort of insight will be very helpful.

See if the following help:
Remove any excess USB devices.
Try uninstalling USB drivers.

thanks, I will try that. Funny thing is, this is so random. For example for the last week it hasn't frozen once and yet my external HDD is still plugged in etc.

If you have the time and the means, you could always try a fresh install with the latest drivers etc, just to ensure it isnt a driver issue to some extent.

I would advise re-installing Windows as a first step and if this does not change anything a hard drive test might be a good idea just in case. Eddy has a good point also and it would be could if you could let us know how much space is available? The machine does generally freeze a lot more when that is the problem though. If you have taken up loads of space make sure to turn hibernation off and move your paging file

Thanks for all your replies, funnily enough I reinstalled the OS very recently, there is enough space on all my drives. I have not had my external hdd plugged in for a while and I have had no freezes...any suggestions on what to do? Still go ahead with a fresh OS install?

my pc froze again, this time it didn't have my external WD 1tb drive, i have no other external storage plugged in. Event viewer showed the same message i think:

The driver \Driver\WudfRd failed to load for the device SWD\WPDBUSENUM\_??_USBSTOR#Disk&Ven_Generic-&Prod_SM#xD-Picture&Rev_1.00#20060413092100000&1#{53f56307-b6bf-11d0-94f2-00a0c91efb8b}.

I haven't tried uninstalling USB drivers yet, could your point me to the specific ones or what Im exactly looking for please?

Your USB controller isn't ready for the hardware changes, or it's failing to trigger, causing the crashes.

Go into services.msc and look for Windows Driver Foundation - User-mode Driver Framework, if it's set to manual change the startup type to "Automatic", shut down the PC, restart, then check again to see that it's still set to "automatic". Now plug in your USB device and windows will search and install the correct USB drivers.

just done what you said, set it to automatic, I restarted and checked it again, and its back to manual.

When you set it to automatic did you refresh it also? Sorry... my mistake.. Doh! Lack of sleep is hitting me hard.

It will update the Service.msc before you reboot.

Any hoo All the Relevant USB Controller Drivers for your board are >>Here<<

Well I did a fresh install...installed the drivers from Asus, plugged in the external drive, it installed fine. Few hours later.....FREEZEEEEEEEE again :((( same s**t again:
The driver \Driver\WudfRd failed to load for the device SWD\WPDBUSENUM\_??_USBSTOR#Disk&Ven_Generic-&Prod_SM#xD-Picture&Rev_1.00#20060413092100000&1#{53f56307-b6bf-11d0-94f2-00a0c91efb8b}.

The external drive plugs into a usb 3.0 port which is in the 2.5" bay which is plugged into a usb 3.0 header on the motherboard.

Its been like that for over a year no problem, only for the last month or more its been a problem.

However I went back into event viewer and these 'driver failed to load' (there were more than one i think all the usb devices) were just after I had manually restarted the computer. SO the freezing therefore has nothing to do with what I have been posting (my bad i should have looked at the time stamps). Ive looked through the entire event viewer and found nothing just before the computer locked up.

Possible hardware issue?

Does anyone have any ideas? I am really helpless with this one...I can only think that the problem may have started after I changed my graphics card...
