Compact digital camera ideas?

Hey guys

18th coming up soon and a bit stuck for what I want to buy with the monies xD

Anyway, I don't have my own camera and the family have a canon ixus 50 (5mp) between us all.

I want to do quite a bit of travelling soon especially japan. So I feel my shoddy 3.2mp nokia cameraphone wont suffice.

I think I'm right in thinking that canon generally make the best cameras (lenses). Looking for sub £200, easy to carry/store and being a novice camera user (but one who appreciates quality shots) which would you recommend?

Thanks

I could either go with a Canon or Sony. I've always had sony's, and my dad mostly canons, but he switched to sony having seen my results.

Saying Canon are better on the lenses is debatable, they do make amazing lenses, but they have been known to make pretty poor ones to.

Personally I would go with Sony, having had them in the past, but the choice is yours, and either a canon/sony will be very good :)

Panasonic cameras have good lenses on them and usually do decent movies too.

I bought my daughter a panasonic fs5 10mp camera a year ago and she is still well impressed with it as am i.

I would buy any newer panasonic camera or a cannon is100 camera as i hear they are good, it may not help you much but the main thing i like is optical zoom as digital zoom is of less quality.

hmm... which model? al lthe reviews state they are pretty good...

otherwise you can go for an ultrazoom.... s5800 can be had for cheap, s8000fd is also good

I think it's the TZ4.. the pictures look ok, but compared to an SLR, the colours are just wrong. I know it's not going to be as good, but they're just wrong, its hard to say, but I really dont like it, and it now gathers dust.

Haha.... in comparison to an SLR, all comacts/ ultrazooms will pale in comparison...

What you need to do is compare against other compacts/zooms etc....

I got a Kodak 'something or other' that was marginally cheap, threw in a large capacity card and took pictures whenever I go away. Only about 200 or so, but it's vital to have something when u go away.

I did think it was a pos camera, til some1 showed me how to use it ^.~
