Is it bird? Is it a plane?

No....... it's clarke Kentsfield (6700) - the superman of CPU's!!

And his trusty sidekick - ASUSMAN!!

ASUSMAN is off to Persivore for a full suite of mods which will give it enough life to last me until the more kentsfield friendly MSI Powered up edition boards are realeased in September (so look out for a very good Conroe board FS shortly after ;))

Should be built up over the weekend for a good benching session - watch this space.

Veyy nice M8, looks like your be getting the No1 spot back very soon in the benches, this should shut a few of the wingers up.

I wasn't going to upgrade but the opportunity presented itself, hopefully it will do what is required in the benchmarks and away we go.

For a few dollars more than a Conroe XE system I got next years CPU today - so even though the upgrade is now - I only really need to consider GPU's next year, G80 (90nm) is no longer in my 2006 roadmap (replaced by MSI powered up Mobo in September), it'll have to wait, or I may just go straight to G81 (65nm?) ;)

Mav

PS: And thats how you take a pic to show you really do have the gear!!

So will you be running the 79's with this kit at the mo untill the G81's come out.

Ps point taken about the pics if anyone wants me to confirm my setup i will do it as showed.

Yep the 7900's and cracked drivers, which were unanimously accepted as okay to run by all in a recent post (since removed for other reasons).

I chose to go with the 7900's as although they are up for grabs at a great price - interest was limited and although personally I prefer officially recognised scores, there is still a lot of performance left in them for current benchmarks.

The other reason is that we have yet to see the NF590 results for Intel - so official scores could still be possible if I wait a few months (it's the last piece of teh jigsaw before I decide which mobo to settle on, MSI Powered up is the the option right now though).

sounds good M8 cant wait to see the scores you will get some record breaking stuff for sure.

I dunno mate - if you had a chance with similar gear I think you'd be giving me more than a run for me money (given the results you are enjoying right now) - just trying to stay one step ahead of ya ;)

It will be fun bouncing of each outher next year when i upgrade, but untill then i will just have to be happy with being UK No1 with my 6800's.:)

Mav Kentisfield is a batched as a Conroe E6600 not E6700!!

4 cores and 8MB L2catch

Still let the games begin eh!!

The _only_ issue I can see with kentsfield is that you loose overall raw clockspeed. Single threaded apps (ie 3dmark 01/03/05 to an extent, and Pi) might well "suffer" Anything that's multithreaded (06/CPC etc) should see a massive improvement. Shoud also be damn nice for gaming too :D

4ghz should be a fairy comfortable speed from the chip, which isnt exactly slow tho ;)

Thats my way of thinking, respecatble single threaded scores (not the highest, not the lowest either) - plus the MSI mobo is good for a 355mhz FSB with Kentsfield. http://www.msi.com.tw/program/products/mainboard/mbd/pro_mbd_detail.php?UID=746

But when I made teh decision I was thinking ahead - it should prove to be a sound investment - I am guessing the retail K6700 will cost in excess of £600 (as it is 2 conroe cores on one chip with 2x4mb cache) and most of what we see being developed now revolves around multi threaded applications.

The unknown bonus - if reverse-threading comes to fruition.......wowzers!!

I guess for running 4 instances of 32m superpi - it will be great ;)

under phase this was achieved by someone else:

I agree mav with latest software and benches like the likes of 3Dmark07 due to come out soon which uses duel core and HD technology this is the way to go because it wont be long for all the other early bench tests like 3Dmark 03-05 to go the same route as 3Dmark 01, plus it does look like Intel will be using reverse-threading unlike AMD which was a mith.

Oo Mav sorry i stand very correceted...seams you have possibly rev 2 or rev 3 of this chip!!! I'm going to harsa Ron totmrow about the newer chips...still nice 6months + ahead

I have no idea what this means :?

Anyhow - The final piece of the jigsaw landed today - OCZ PC2 8000 EL XTC Ram 2x1GB of it :)

Sorry for shakey pic - I am so excited!!

Very nice M8 cant wait to see what she will do, and what results you can get out of it, look forward to following your benches good luck M8.

Have a Kentsfield on the way too but haven't sorted out a mobo or RAM as yet. Paid by paypal using an eCheque which seems to take over a week to clear ahrrrhhh - only a day or so to go 8)
