Changing my GPU

Hey all,

I'm thinking about changing from AMD back to Nvidia GPU i was thinking about either doing a SLi setup with 2 GTX960 or 1 GTX980 i have read that 2 GTX 960's come close enough to 1 GTX980 or should i just pay the extra $90 and go with a GTX980.

The reason why i'm changing again is the area that i live in it can get very hot where i am and very humid weather so that is one of the main reasons why i want to go back to a nvidia GPU.

These are the only 2 GPU's i'm looking at.
EVGA GeForce GTX 960 SuperSC ACX 2.0+ 4GB
EVGA GeForce GTX 980 Superclocked ACX 2.0 4GB

What AMD card do you have as the 980's aren't really that cool anyway not sure about the 960's but two will probably be just as hot if not hotter than a single gpu anyway so you maybe wasting money

Sapphire R9 390 atm just watching a video atm the temperature is 50c to me that is high
I know that is normal temperature but still just doing simple things

True, but wouldn't a SLi setup look better in a gaming system tho

The Sapphire 390 is such a long card when it's in a Define S.

Not sure if the sapphire has it but some AMD 3rd party cards((nvidia too) will not have the fans spinning until you hit a certain temp threshold. So it could just be that if temp is scaring you? Can always setup a custom profile. As it is changing from a 390 to a 980 isn't worth the money at all. It's like going from a 390 to a 390x.

If you still want to switch then I'd say a single 980 always over two 960s. But I'd really try to hold off on upgrading or switching as compared to next gen GPUs, according to rumors they will far outpace what we have now so resale values may not hold well

It looks like the sapphire fans spin all of the time, The problem is when next gen cards come out the re-sale is not going to be good, now might be a good time to sell the current GPU's, Single card setup makes the build look bare tho but i do agree about getting the higher end GPU's.

But there pro's and con's to both.

There is, personally I'd stay with the 390 you have and just up the fan speeds on them to keep them cooler as I don't think it's worth spending the money to barely upgrade to a 980, even if you sell the 390 to get back some funds. Although if you really want to switch over then you'd still be happy.

My 980s are 51+53 degrees with zero load. The fans don't spin till they get to 70.

Keep what you have until Pascal or go a single 980. Yes the SLI looks good but just adds more heat to the system.

The fan speed is already at 100%, there is nothing else i really can do.

The thing is with the Sapphire fans will always spin

980 Ti classified here and it runs at 28'c with a 1:1 almost inaudible fan profile when watching videos, Even at load it's fairly quiet.

If not the Classified you could go for either the Strix 980 Ti or EVGA 980 Ti ACX as both have awesome temps.

You also don't live in Aus like he does where his heat is terrible.

The cheaper option than getting a 980 would to be trying out something like the G10 with a H60 or similar? Or the NZXT version, can't remember what it was called. Would be a pretty big drop in temps and remain much more quiet.

Yeah but then he voids the warranty on those cards which would be a bit iffy unless there are no screws being covered by stickers ?

On the EVGA is fine they allow that as far as i know

SLI like Crossfire hasn't been very good lately. There are quite a few of the new games that don't support either. Plus the 960 has a terrible memory bus and will fall apart at high resolutions.

I'd say 980 but it will be a pure sidegrade.

So, let me offer you some really good advice. Buy a AIO and a Kraken bracket and liquid cool the GPU. You'll never hear it again and it will never go over 50c in gaming.

Well the only AIO i will think about buying is the Fractal Kelvin series nothing else esp not asetek can't stand asetek products now cause they want to go around suing everyone over the littlest things so screw themselves as a company.

I never heard that about the GTX960 about the memory bus and i have watched quite a few unboxing & overview videos.

The GTX 960 is an entry level card dude. It will have a crippled memory bus. I mean heck, even the 970 and 980 have terrible memory pipes compared to AMD.

Nvidia have done their level best to derp entry level SLI solutions. Ever since the GTX 460 laughed at the 480 (when in SLI) they have made sure their lower end cards are derped to some degree taking away all of the fun. AMD have done it too, by making their lower end cards 2gb.

As for Asetek? one day you will start a business and you will see people copying you and stealing your ideas. That's capitalism unfortunately. I don't think it's wrong of them to make sure that their designs are protected. I think it's more the sensationalist PC news reporters making a meal out of their lawsuits.

GTX 960 memory spec -

128 bit interface
112gb/sec

GTX 970 memory specs -

256 bit interface
224gb/sec

And the 970 is known to start wobbling when it gets to 4k due to the memory bandwidth. I would hate to think what a 960 would do at 1440p/4k.

Yes i understand that with the memory bus, As i have said in the past i don't like the fact that the GTX970 has only a usable 3.5GB and 0.5GB boost now as far as i know the GTX960 doesn't have that issue problem is i have been thinking about wanting to do a SLI setup but i would never to be able to afford to get 2 GTX980's

Remember dude in 2014 Asetek stop Fractal Design from selling there AIO cooler in America which a lot of people were annoyed bye that i know of a few Youtube people who aren't the biggest Asetek fans either over that.
