CFX/SLI setup with old HX750W

Hey, I just watched TTL's latest video and thought I should take his advice.
I bought my computer in 2011 so the PSU has aged and "degraded" I guess, but I don't know how much it actually matters.
I'm currently looking to upgrade my computer and thought I should go with CFX/SLI since I already paid for those capabilities, but correct my thinking if I'm wrong here.

My current hardware is;

Corsair HX750W
MSI P67A-G45
i5 2500k @ 4.4 GHz
16GB Corsair Vengeance 1.5v LP @ stock
WDC Black 1TB, Hitachi 750GB, Crucial M500 mSATA 240GB
and a handed down Gigabyte GTX580 in a Fractal Design R4 with 3 intake fans and 2 exhaust.

Now before you ask, I bought the PSU with a 6950 I unlocked to a 6970 thinking I was going to buy another one and CFX them, but they started locking the shaders physically instead of locking them out with their BIOS so that never happened.

My budget isn't set in rock, but I don't see a reason to go over ~500£ since I use 1080p monitors. I've been eyeing the 280x(250£ in Sweden) which would put me at 500£ for the pair, but everything I've seen tells me that my hx750w wouldn't be able to power them, especially with overclocking. The same goes for GTX 770. Everyone has been recommending a 850+ PSU for those setups.

I feel like I've been rambling too much, my question is basically; which CFX/SLI setup can my PSU safely handle for years and is worth the money? Or should I forget it and get a 780/780ti?

Thank you in advance.

Remember I was talking about new tech matey - 850w would be a good point for the 770 or 280x dual cards. Any above is headroom to keep the fans low.

Remember my point was to show that the small PSU worked, most shitty advise is that you need a 1000w psu for it to just boot :p

Yeah, of course. Just wanted to make certain I'd been told right before blowing my money, I'll probably end up with the 780. Thanks for the help!
