hi.

is there any way to emulate a dos soundcard ?

basicly it needs io adress 220 irq 5 and dma 1 as the soundcards had in the good old days.

tried vdmsound but refused to work and the homeage is longgone so no help there.

when i try to run carmageddon in 3dfx mode i get an dll missing error, any ideas what missing ?

Regards

I gave up trying to get the old games to run on Windows XP, and just installed a really low end hard disk with Windows 98 on it.

tried dosbox last night couldnt get the cd to be recognized so carmageddon refused to work but going to try a crack tonight but ran extremly slow in the menus.

XMS, w98 isnt an option as the motherboard i have doesnt support it and still need some kind of program to emulate a legacy soundcard

also tried a couple of different 3dfx wrappers but couldnt get them to work as some unknown dll file is missing.

any ideas how to find out which it is ?

Hmm it's been a long time since i messed with anything like this. I'd quite like to set up an old PII rig with a 3dfx card in it for old games, that would be pretty sweet.

I'm wondering if there is a demo of carmageddon somewhere i could download and have a go trying to get it to work..

the demo for carmageddon isnt that hard to find and the game itelf shouldnt be that hard either.

and why get a p2 when a modern computer can do this :D

first track on C1 with splatpack installed.

to start the game i execute an exe file which starts a glide server, then i right click on the games exe file and chose "run with vdms"

vdms is the legacy soundprogram i use.

a good game doesnt have to have stateoftheart gfx and 24bit sound in 7.1 to be good, gameplay and feeling is much more important to me and that something carmageddon has alot of.

i could have tweaked the game alittle more to look even better but its 7.22am so think i will get some sleep instead but i do have raised scenery cutoff distance from 50 to 150, the game itsel cannot raise it that high but can handle the settings without crashing.

the first 3 images are on a HIGH building, the fourth one shows water and cant say it looks bad considering the age of the game.

the fifth and sixth image has fog turned off and the seventh image shows what happens if you drive ALITTLE to fast :p

As for building an old system to play old games, you're better off with a P200 MMX rather than a PII as games using DOS4GW runtimes will not work on a CPU over 200MHz.

noveltylamp, to me it sounds like the game itself isnt properly coded.

a properly coded game has no trouble with cpu speed :/

not even the game im playing at the moment has any problem and it was coded for dos 5.0

Fragtek, why not.

carmageddon is one hellof agame.

the screenshots comes with the game running through 3dfx which gives a higher resolution, 640*480.

to bad they dont make games like that anymore :(

I have Carma2 on cd somewhere, I should try and find it and emulate it in Parallels :D

Edit: Are you running it directly through DOS or are you using like Win95?

I know I'm in a bit late on this subject but I'm trying to get carmageddon to run under win98 though I have Win XP installed. I can't seem to get any sound drivers to work. My current soundcard is a simple audigy one and I have no idea how to get the drivers installed for dos play really and I'm not sure there are drivers for that. Is there a method to just get these old games to run and play like normal on any windows?...

well, you either need the win95 exe's or a soundblaster emulation program.

im running vdmsound myself and it emulates a simple soundblaster and works with carmageddon and 3dfx versions too.' http://www.abandonia.com/utility/VDMSound 2.1.0.exe

use it by rightclicking the exe file and choose "run with vdmsound"

the downside with w95 exe is they dont support any other resolution than 320x240, the dos exe supports 640x480 with the "-hires" tag and the 3dfx can run at any resolution you want to.

btw welcome:wavey:

Well, 3 hours later I've gotten it to work. I have been using SoundFX and vdms and although it works unfortunately it runs way too fast. The seconds go by so fast there's no way to play the game. Has anyone found a way to slow the damn seconds down or am I screwed. I've noticed people are playing with 3000ghz+ machines and that's way faster than mine, I am curious as to how...

Codeguru

PS- I tried the glide server deal, and it just doesn't want to work with vdms, too choppy and slow. And soundfx with glide is exactly like without glide, too fast on the second ticks.

which 3dfx emulaton program did you use ?

im using dgvoodoo and does the work here and in 3dfx the time runs as it should.

I'm using glidos. But I guess I'll try the one you are using...

Codeguru

Edit- Ok, I ran it putting the files in the carmageddon directory. And, well, it died when the race started and took windows with it. What settings do you use?

Edit- I keep trying to run it but every time after I pick the starting place for my car it just goes black and freezes. Unless it's in windowed mode I have to restart the computer. Might dgvoodoo have some problem using vdms?
