Can't install Win7 from USB

For some reason I can't install a fresh copy of Windows 7 from a USB stick. When you click on install Windows I get an error message a few moments later about can't find driver for my SATA controller. I have tried all the drivers from the Asus site but still no luck.

Installing from DVD is a different story, exactly the same copy of Windows and Installs and runs fine. Is there a difference between installing from flash and DVD?

I think you need to make it a bootable USB, which it isn't by default. You have to do that when installing Linux anyway, so I assume it also applies to Windows.

It boots from USB into Windows setup, lets me select my region and stuff then you get the box where you click Install Windows. Before you get to select express or custom install, I get that missing drivers or whatever message.

The exact same copy on DVD works fine.

I did use Rufus to create a bootable USB. Whether I should have used diskpart instead?

Oh I see, I thought it was simply unrecognised as a boot device. I can't comment on the differences between the software you used, but the fact that you got into setup makes it sound like it worked fine as a bootable device. Is there no way you can simply use the disc copy, with an external drive for example, if you do not have a disc drive in your computer?

Rufus should be fine, I always use it for my bootable USB's

Are you using USB 3 by any chance? That causes problems installing from a usb stick.

Try that, I've heard about problems with this as well. Never had the problem myself, I do not have USB3 :D

Remmy, I'm on my phone at the mo but I can connect the optical drive when I get home but this next bit answer SieB's question which I will try first because my usb stick is connected to my front panel which is usb 3.0

I will try in a usb 2.0 port and see what happens and if that don't work then I'll try ms usb tool and see if that helps and post back. Yet again, thanks for the help. I want to do away with the optical drive. The 350D looks stupid with it in there.

The worst case scenario would be to only use it for installing the OS, you can remove it immediately afterwards and forget about it until you next need it.
