can't get i7 to 4ghz :(

so i've been playing with my i7 950 lately and managed to get it up to 3.9 ghz (195 x 20) i believe its at

1.285 vcore
195 bclk
20 multi
1.5 dram
1.325 qpi
cpu pll 1.9
llc 100%
ioh 1.24591

but i have some problems, firstly at 3.9ghz when i switch the computer on, the screen stays black and stays off until i push the restart button and after 10 seconds it switches on and posts and boots normally, even on prime i did 3 hrs and it was stable with temps maxing at 74 so i think thats good. but i still hate restarting everytime.

on a second note when i tried to up the bclk to 200 for 4ghz, and voila now the bootmgr is not found. i mean wtf? i really wish to get it up to 4 ghz,any volts or settings i should increase to atleast fix the booting problem.

Whats your memory at mate ??

Also what stepping is that cpu ?

Drop the memory right down and see if it makes a difference..

And you can go right up to 1,4v with that cpu if I remember correctly ....

not really, the ram is rated at those timings so i didn't see the point of doing it. now that you pointed it out i'll give it a try.

set the vcore to 1.3, timing to 9-9-9-24 and the bclk to 200. i'm running prime95 as i'm writing this post but i haven't checked on the posting problem yet as i have to switch it off and let it set for some time for it to happen, will check tomorrow morning though.

Ive had those cpu's wanting 1.4 and above for 200x20 fella. Just keep an eye on the cooling.

QPI is high for 1600 btw, work on getting the clock stable then work the qpi back.

max temps right now are 76-76-74-75 so i dont think its too bad after 30 mins of prime, if i don't get any errors after 2 hours i'll lower the vcore and qpi a notch and re-test everything until it's unstable

Lower vcore first then test then qpi. Doing both at the same time will just make it more complicated if you get errors where as if you do one then you know what the problem is. Never overclocked on 1156 but this is what i would assume.

it 1366 not 1156 :) i might lower a bit the qpi first as ttl said it was high so i'll feel better if i lower that first :P

what should i target my qpi at?

i don't really know much about it.

woke up early today and after going for a 5km run i decided to play a bit with the vcore and qpi and i think i found my lowest stable settings.

vcore - 1.28125
qpi- 1.3 (any lower and ibt would crash almost instantly)
the others i left them as described in the first post except for the ram timings which are at 9-9-9-24

edit: i must have jinxed myself as i wanted to make sure it was stable i am going to run prime for 6 hrs minimum and after just being 10 mins into it it gave me bsod. kicked up the vcore a notch and testing again.

Looks good mate, and those temps are sweet on 1366 ...

Edit ...
Do you have hyperthreading disabled ? the gflops seem very very low ...

pretty sure its enabled and task manager shows 8 threads so i'd say its enabled.

i don't know i had nothing running except the radio on wmp, windows security essentials, evga precision, and the keyboard driver apart from the monitoring stuff so i don't know why the gflops are so low.

All is well then... Try and get that cpu to 4.5 with 1,4v :)

nah man i don't afford another cpu if something goes wrong, i need to start getting driving lessons and eventually buy a car, and also i need to get a job :(

The QPI is a little high and the VCore is a little low based on my testings. Have a go at putting the CPU VCore up to 1.35V and then you should be able to easily get 4GHz, the CPU is a D0 after all so there is no reason why it shouldn't hit that speed :)

really I don't see why i should do that, i managed to get 4ghz with 1.3 qpi and 1.2875vcore, 1.35 will create so much more heat.

update/ 30-05-13
so yesterday it started doing it again, pc turns on, screen stays black. and then when i press the restart it posts normally and boots without a hitch. tried to google the problem but the most of them i found did not boot at all.

I also tried to kick the dram voltage to 1.52 and the vcore to 1.2925 but it didn't make any difference.

Here are the current settings:

ratio 20
bclk 200
dram 1603
uclk 3208
qpi 7218

timing 9-9-9-24 2N (7-8-7-24 2N Stock)

vcore 1.2875
cpu pll 1.9
qpi/dram 1.3
ioh 1.24
dram 1.5
llc enabled

Cpu i7 950 D0
Mobo asus p6t
ram g.skill pi series 1600
cooling corsair h110
psu corsair hx850

What periphials do you have plugged in ?

I had boot problems on my z77 board and it was down to the h100i usb connector.. Try a boot with no periphials plugged in and see what happens ...

Also you should be able to run that ram at 1N
