Can't decide (Nvidia or ATI?)

Greetings.

Recently (more like three days ago), I was searching Newegg for a new graphics card, and I came across a 6800 GS at $200 US. After a thousand 'omfgs', I realized that they were out of stock. So, I decide to check back now and then. However, it seems that Newegg took down the card from their website just today.

So, now, to the point, what should I get? There are alot of good x800 GTOs and x1600 and 6800s. I need an AGP and preferably, at 200 or less, and I prefer it to be from Newegg. Any recommendations? I don't OC, so I hope these cards can run perhaps FEAR or Oblivion at 1024*768 with decent medium high settings and nice fps (exclude the Soft Shadows).

This will be my first upgrade from a GeForce 5200 FX. Thanks a lot!

Edit: I came up with these two cards....

ATI:

Nvidia:

Which one of these two are the best?

lol i introduced him to this forum.. he needs a new card for his old dell..

i suck at judging cards for other people so i sent him straight to this forum..

hopefully u guys can help

Welcome man! :wavey:

Hmm... what's your system? Would help if you could tell us :) Personally, I think you should make the move to PCI-E. Not worth staying in the past too long ;). Anyways, PCIE cards cost less. That being said, if you wish to remain AGP, I would say the GTO would be the better pick of those 2 cards.

between ati and nvidia i would say ati.

my 9800pro worked much better than the 7800gt in a dual monitor setup for example.

I agree with WC, its really not worth having an AGP system anymore, the cards just can't perform to what PCI E offers

Well I think undoubtedly out of the two cards you showed me the X800GTO is the best choice. I would say however: if you can get a 6800GT/Ultra/GS then you should go for a card like that

Also the IQ on the newer ATI cards is very nice - better thatn nvidia :)

I think the GTO is going to suit you best mate, with a quick flash of the BIOS and some overclocking you can have yourself a true X850XT PE, monster cards.

The AGP X850 Pro card's aren't terrible. My buddy has one, pull's nice FPS in CS Source paired with a 3000+ @ 2Ghz :)

Nick

And they can unlock too! So ya, if you want to keep AGP, try to get your hands on one of those. Friend of mine has one, his unlocked fine.

Im gonna go the other way to most people and say a 6800. The some AGP 6800 chips (NV40, i think) unlock to 16 pipes. But then again i don't know if youd want to do that if your not overclocking it...

Although the X800 wins in raw power i think the 6800 has more advanced features.

And then theres ATIs 'drivers'

he didn't mention this.. but his budget is 200 bucks.. so switching to pci-E is out of the question..

@WC that friend of yours stoped doing it because he had to declock his card from the xt-pe clock settings everytime he turned on his comp. because it crashes a lot with the xt-pe clock settings.. so maybe if you have better cooling..

since mehrune's budget is 200$ 850 pro is out of question.. and so are all the other good mid-end cards like the 6800gt and so on...

Just to let you know to be careful when ordering a X800 GTO as the newer ones are based on a different core which wont unlock. I am not sure on the details but i read it somewhere.

If i were you I would try for anything in the X800 series, I had an X800 Pro and it was a very good card to me.

Just my two pence.

Sam

@Inf dude... he could have always just modified the BIOS to drop the clocks down... And also, it is perfectly feasible to go to PCIE on a $200 budget (yes, he did say his budget in his first post man). Get a budget board and a 7600GS. You guys still haven't told us what platform he's on.

@Hyper AFAIK, the AGP GTO's never were able to unlock in the first place, it was only the PCIE versions (and that was only the Connect3D GTO and the Sapphire GTO2)

OOps, totally forgot about my specs.

intel P4 3.0Ghz

1GB DDR SDRAM 400Mhz

Windows XP Pro

And this is a dell dimension 8300 (my first computer...im serious). So, I'm not so sure about the specs if you want really specific like brands.

And, since i'll mostly go with ATI and very little OC (maybe), I came up with these two ATI ones.

POWERCOLOR Radeon X800GTO X800GTO AGP 256MB Video Card

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814131010

SAPPHIRE Radeon X800GTO 100131L Video Card

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814102609

Which one of these are good? I would prefer PowerColor, but I need some 'reviews' and recommendations. :worship: Thanks!

Oh, I don't have a choice for PCI or AGP since it's a dell motherboard. My budget =D

I personally like what Sapphire does since they are the closest partners to ATI... Either brand should suit you well however, and those cards are definately power houses for the price.

WC u crazy? switching to pciE with 200 bucks???

u relli think he can get decent motherboard, Chip and graphic card for 200 bucks??? man what are you thinking???

you want him to max out on like doom 1 or sumthing??

wow...

and he is on a dell (mentioned in first post)

i believe the specs are pentium 4 3.0ghz (socket 478 most likely)

dimension 8300 if u wanna check it out..
