Buying a new SSD 2013

Hi Forum, newbie to the forum and looking for some genuine advice on a not so technical level to help me decide on my first purchase of SSD.

Basically when it comes to technology people always upgrade, there are always new parts "new and improved" version of hardware being pushed out. So now that we're well in the 1st quarter of 2013, is it actually a good time to buy a SSD drive?

rough PC spec i5 2500k 8gb ram, GTX 670 OC, mainly use my machine for gaming, streaming etc. Never used a SSD before.

Here are basically some senarios in my head right now.

1. Since the HDD serve me fine, just keep waiting for another few more months or even till end of 2013 until something new comes out / price drop.

2. Buy a cheaper smaller, good price to performance ratio drive like M4 / M5 plextor, samsung 830 and just use a 256GB one for games and apps for now and use HDD as storing other files, until bigger and faster drives becomes cheaper.

3. Just "yolo" and buy a samsung 840 pro 512GB and not have to worry about it for a while.

4. Buy an absolute old drive, something a few generations back that is still a good upgrade over my HDD and use that for now just purely out of money saving purposes.

So what would you guys recommend? Honestly would love to hear everyone's opinion :) Thanks in advance! ^_^

I think option 4 is out of the question, due to lifespan issues you dont wanna be buying a ssd second hand that could have been rinsed to within a inch of its death... also you will have no warranty..

If you can afford the 512gb samsung i'd go for that. I don't think SSD's can get alot faster till SATA 4 comes out etc from what i remember. Option 2 is what i'm thinking of seeing as i don't mind waiting for games to load, I just want my OS to be fast.

If you act quickly Crucial are selling their M4 512GB SSD for £279.98, which is pretty good. Not the fasted drive and a few mixed reviews of it to be fair.

The offer ends this Thursday. I thought about it but I don't really need it right now.

Option 2 gets my vote but that samsung 512GB would be beast but probably more than is worth spending.

Advice when getting an SSD is always pretty much the same- get one by a good, reputable brand and get one as big as you can afford/want. In my opinion, trading a bit of outright performance is more than ofset by going for a drive that is much more reliable.

Thanks for the replies so far guys :D seems like no. 2 is the popular choice, but if i was able to, still get as big of a drive as I can. From that tweaktown test of the 840 pro endurance apparently i've read that people think the 830 is still a longer lasting drive than the 840pro, is that true?

IMO the PRO is not worth the extra over the regular one for general use... If you want the best of the best, sure go for it, but I would get the regular one with £50 cashback ;)

True but do not forget that the non pro uses TLC nand and will die much faster than the Pro. Thats why they are not only slower but less reliable. But if all you do is use it for gaming then the non pro is all you need:)

Hi FYW12 and welcome to the OC3D forums,
If you have a decent storage drive or 2 , I would just go for a Samsung 840 pro 256gb or a Corsair GTX neutron 240gb for your (main drive) operating system. But that depends on how much you can afford , and how much ssd storage you really need. A 512gb drive would be nice but they are a bit pricey for a good one , But that's your call.

I have the same problem, or questions, so to speak, and I decided I'm gonna stick with mechanical 'till I can afford a big, fast, SSD. I don't mind waiting a couple of minutes for a game to load, and I never turn the PC off, so booting isn't an issue. A 240-256GB SSD seems too small these days, and it would be a pain having to delete stuff constantly, and a bigger one is too expensive at the moment, at least for me.
