Budget Gaming Motherboard: Which Chipset?

Hi guys,

I'm looking at a budget gaming Skylake motherboard for a friend.
All he needs is a PCI-E x16 and 4 RAM slots, so I looked at the B150 chipset as the cheapest. Apparently this only supports 8 PCI-E lanes yet has PCI-E x16 slots.

What do you guys think, B150, H110 or H170 chipset?

Cheers.

I use a B150 motherboard for my work PC and it works perfectly well.

All it really lacks is detailed options for voltages and memory speeds, preventing me from undervolting my CPU or running my memory at its full speeds of 2800MHz.

H170 will give you the full features with the exception of overclocking support.

Overclocking/voltage controls aren't required, this build is for a young teenager who just wants to game. So B150's PCI-E lane support won't affect/limit any GPU out at the moment. I'm unsure how important they are tbh.

What GPU and CPU are you planning to use?

If you go B150 you will be limited to 2133MHz memory, or at least I was on this MSI mortar motherboard.

I got the Asus H110 M.2 for my stepdad last week as his old Athlon 7750 system decided to die after 7 years great service with a Skylake G4400 (3.3Ghz) and 8GB of 2133Mhz Crucial RAM, its a dual core beast which reminds me so much of the G3258 only without the OC. It's a fantastic little system for what he needs paired with a GTX950 it rocks all his games too which considering it only cost £180 including a 1TB WD Black on top, bargain.

They haven't told me the exact model but an i5. 2133MHz is probably fine.
GPU, I suggested, 1060/970, RX470/480 depending on budget.

I was looking at this one for reference.

Remember to look at OCUK's B grade items. It is a great place to save money. Look at the board below.

You can also get some great CPU deals from CEX, got a 6700 non-k for £170

So in summary the chipset isn't really relevant for this build then, the H110 or B150 are fine.

I did forget about the B-Grade stuff actually.
