See if you can find a used 2500k/3570k with motherboard.
You should be able to pick up a used 4670k for around the 130-140 mark, and a new ASUS Z97-P Mobo is around the 75-80 mark. I know that this takes you slightly over budget, but will offer big advantages over earlier series chips. If your not looking to overclock, then a lower spec i5 on LGA1150 is an option, which will save you 40-50.

im pretty happy with my 2500k but with a small budget a 2nd gen non k cpu and a board that cant over clock would probably be a lot cheaper.
may even get one with ram that will leave enough over for something like a 7850 gpu. which may just be enough to play most games at 1080p low/med settings @60fps. although if you could find a 780 to buy with the change (slightly possible) then that would be the better option. much better than a 7850 and would be the gpu i aim for on a 2nd gen i5 system.
oh ok. so i guess its a reasonably large case that you have for it then. and will allow for a better selection of boards?
