BT are starting to upgrade all the exchanges etc onto the new 21CN network. completion date is meant to be jan 2008. They have created a website in conjuction with ofcom to notify when your area is being upgraded.

The website can be found here

Just checked my area and o yeah, what a suprise!!! being upgraded on Jan-Mar 2011 :O

Sorry - we can't find your date. Please contact your telecoms supplier

hehe, dont thnk i have a BT line :D

I get July - Sept 2008, too bad I won't be home for another year after then (That said, Swansea are meant to be getting it a hell of a lot earlier). What they're doing is essentially creating a huge country wide IP network, and presumably things such as voip will have a key role. It should also mean people will get speeds far higher than ADSL, but more importantly it will save BT a **** load of money ;).

I worked at BT over the summer on a student placement - i heard that Cardiff is having a trial at this moment? So i do believe that the lucky people in Cardiff are on 21CN, whatever that is?

After 3 months there I was none the wiser, as the project is shrouded by so much BT specific jargon that is hard to decode what the thing actually does. Possibly TV via broadband (on demand) and basically broadband all over the house in clever gadgets?

read futher up this thread, there was a pretty good explanation!

On a side note, i read somewhere a company was nearly ready to roll out iptv, it combines with freeview and you get 1.5meg streams of channels too. on demand stuff in mpeg 4. so should be the same quality as freeview.
