Bottleneck ?

Ok here are my specs .. ASUS Rampage 3 Formula , I7 980 hexacore,@ 4.3 Ghz,, 12 gigs of Gskill sniper series ram 7-8-7-24 @ 1643 MHz ,, Corsair GS 240 gig SSD ,, 2 WD BLACK 500 gig , in Raid 0 , 2 Evga FTW Plus 4 gig GTX 680's in SLI.. Now the question , reading around the net and taking into concideration that in BF3 my GTX 580 SLI set up performed better ,, is my CPU holding Back my 680's ? My 3Dmark11 P score is 17,227 .. GPU's @ stock clocks.. My Heaven Benchmark 3.0 open and run no settings changed @ 1920x1080 is 221.2 FPS .. And vantage P score is 48,532 CPU score 39,930,, GPU's score 52,320 .. What do you guys think ? Is that I7 980 enough ? My cinebench score is 11.09 ... Any help would be awesome thanks !!

Shouldn't be any bottleneck there. Have you checked that battlefield 3 is using both 680's as that might explain why its not performing as well as the 580's.

Yeah no chance youve got a CPU bottleneck. That is still a very capable and potent gaming CPU especially with that big an overclock on it. I agree that its an issues with something else for your 680's not performing as well as your 580's. Driver issues or settings off somewhere.

Bottleneck

Yes I have checked and Bf3 is using both cards ,, Sli working the way it should .. But it only uses like 65 to 80% of the GPU's ... So I was trying to figure out why.. Is it the game just being horribly coded or was my CPU holding My 680's back...

Badly coded game? Vsync on? Low resolution? Poor SLI performance?

But it's not the prossesors fault, for sure. Those Gulftowns still rock! Do a suicidal 4.5GHz (HT off should help with lowering some of the vcore) gameplay to see if anything changes :)

Bottleneck

V-sync is off .. All settings on ultra except motion blur , it is off .. 4xmsaa ,, with my 580's FPS never went below 100 ... They were overclocked to 880 MHz .. With the 680's my FPS are all over the place 60 to 130 on the ground .. 200 in the air ... So you can see how I am thinking bottleneck when in BF3 they are being beat by 580's pretty bad ..

I don't see anything in there that should be bottlenecking that. I personally think it is a driver issue. Make sure you've downloaded the newest patches for the game, and gotten the latest drivers from Nvidia's website.

That gulftown CPU at that clock will shake almost anything to its knees still, so I don't think that is too much of the problem.

A CPU bottleneck would limit the 680's performance it wouldn't reduce it. The fact that you manged to get those results with the 580's suggests that your CPU is more than capable of keeping bf3 over 100fps on those settings. Sounds like a driver or game issue to me.

I'm just taking a massive wild guess. but try dulling down the overclock. maybe your CPU has deteriorated a little over time and can't pull those clocks anymore ?

Bottleneck

My CPU Vcore is only 1.287 .. And never goes over 48 degrees c" and is only 1 1/2 years old ... I also don't think my cinibench score would be 11.09 if CPU was getting degraded do you ? Theoretically a 1366 set up like mine should easily handle 2 680's no ? Both PCIE LANES are 16x / 16x , so what I want to know is all things being equal a I7 980 Hexacore should easily be able to handle 2 GTX 680's right ? And that it's just the game ?

Well a non "x" 980 @4.3 is certainly nothing to sneeze at.
I certainly dont see this as a bottleneck especially if you are just playing BF3.
Game bugs or driver issue.
Your system is a beast so nothing to worry about mate.

Thanks Deejeta !! And all the other replys ,, I was starting to wonder if I should upgrade to 2011 or not ... I guess there isn't really much of a difference between the 2 as far as 6 cores go right ?

Maybe the dual 680 can work fully, because u are on PCI-E 2.0

When you throw a 680s on sli do the pci lanes still on 16x/16x? Or do they go 8x/8x?

IDK if the gap between PCI-E 2.0 to 3.0 is that huge but that maybe the problem

My secong guess would be premature drivers, your CPU is an amazing CPU and can handle almost anything you throw at it this days

Nice System BTW

Sounds like some sort of driver issue. Maybe try disabling one of the cards and running BF3 with just one of them, see what performance you get. One 680 should be able to run BF3 no problem. So you'll know if the single card performs well its an SLI problem.
