bolt spring tension

Hello fellow techies,

Today I have changed thermal compound. It now has Tuniq TX-3, it used to have OCZ Freeze. The cooler is an Antec Kuhler Flow. It is secured with 4 bolts with springs and washers. When I first fitted this cooler using the OCZ stuff I tightened the bolts till they became tight without putting pressure on the springs. Today I put a little pressure on the springs. Core Temp readings are around 10 degrees lower than before. The i5 750 is at stock and the lowest temps are: 24, 21 26, 20

How much pressure should I put on the springs. There is alot of spring and the cooler is tightly fitted. I don't have a torque wrench. I have looked for info on from Antec and haven't found anything and the paper fitting instructions don't help.

Some pics:

This is the cooler: http://www.antec.com/Believe_it/global/product.php?id=NzA0MzE1

I didn't find pics of the same bolt. this picture shows a similar bolt: http://www.overclockers.co.nz/product/cooler/tr/TR-939BTK-B.jpg

Please help if you can,

Thanks

I normally do them right up but without having ever used or seen one I wouldnt like to say.

If you can do it up tight with a screw driver thats normally enough

thanks ok. i stopped using a screwdriver because the pressure was bending the installed board. I used the supplied spanner to get its current tension. for now i'll leave it. I get the Mushkin memory tommorow then I'll OC, if the temps are good I should leave it

The washers are designed to stop people from over tightening and damaging the board, if the cooler comes with washer and you decide to use them, tighten them as much as possible, since you'll get better contact and cooling.

thanks. OK, the AMD fittings don't have washers and their brackets have 4 holes. The 1156 bracket has holes for the 775 setup that are connected to the 1156 holes. The washers also seat the spring properly, without the washer the spring could fall/bend in the 1366 hole. The thread isn't long, the spring is alot longer. I'll keep going till it stops

The bolt snapped. I got the threaded part out of the back-plate with a stanley knife. The spring compressed only a little. I have spare bolts, they are designed for the AMD bracket and are almost identicle, just the top of the bolt is a little thinner on the finger-grip part.

I'm goin to walk the dog and will sort it after

ah the AMD bolts have different threads. I have an assortment of Antec bolts that came with the case and 1 fits. i've used it and will seek a proper bolt tommorow. I think the board is damaged because when i move the mouse it makes a squeeling electrical noise, its not loud.

please help

lol ya daft, wat r ya........a plonker

Edit: About 10 minutes has passed and the noise is dissapearing

Edit: A bit of research showed it could be a static thing. I didn't ground myself all the way through the repair. The system is grounded so it may be loosing a charge

Edit: Ifound this: I had this problem under Windows and also under Ubuntu. It's always the same. You can solve it by muting the sound output from you CD drive. Try it. *thumbs up*

from: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=560609

how do we mute that?

Antec support has a spare parts section, I've completed it

Edit: The noise is not happening now.

I didn't know what was happening with the bolt and spring, I didn't have the mechanical mindset on how it works. When I was fastening the bolt it was making a little pressure on the spring and I didn't know that, so it over-tightened and snapped ofc. When I saw I was pressuring the spring actualy I was forcing the bolt :/ it's designed to safely break so the components dont get stressed I see, erm actualy it broke because the thread section is small, the rest of the bolt is alot thicker and longer. i see the bolts need to be fastened till it becomes alot harder to do, simple. the spring counter pressure wasn't obviouse to me ofc. i guess the other Antec Kuhler desins use the same system. i'll put some pics of the design sometime

This photo is the broken Intel mount bolt next to an AMD mount bolt. Apart from the thread they look identicle:

This photo shows the Intel 1366 backplate. It is similar to the 1156 backplate i use, and i rested the AMD bolt on it:

i recommend setting a cooler on its own before fitting it to the computer to show you how it works
