i'm playing bfbc2 on this rig for a year now and a week ago bfbc2 started crashing my pc. and it's the ugly kind of crash. freeze and i hear the "something is terribly wrong" buzzing noise from my headphones, all i can do is cut the power and restart. i had to reinstall windows anyways, so i did that and installed the drivers which worked perfectly fine 2 weeks ago and the same error occurs. so it's not the software. my gpu is overclocked, but it has been like that for half a year now, it's definitely stable since not even far cry 3 or any benchmarks make it crash. any ideas?

Just try resetting your GPU to stock. It may be fie in other games etc. but different games work in different ways.

I have quite similar rig specs, ive had same issues, its the OC, bc2 is very sensitive when it comes to OC as it often likes to max the cpu load to get most amount of fps, one solution is to turn oc down or make it more stable.
or use vsync to keep those frames on a leash.
bf3 is quite similar in that aspect as well but it doesn't crash. tip for oc, it may be bench stable but thats not always the case in game scenario.

Reset the CMOS, and all overclocks on the graphics card too.
Worth a try, if still happens you can rule out overclocks being the issue.
