Bench Table Build log

A while ago I toyed with the idea of building a case. Now as many of you will know I'm not one for aesthetics really, and as a kind of compromise i settled on a bench table.

The thing will be 15" square, large enough to fit all the wired components and what ever cooling takes my fancy inside, with the motherboard tray on the top.

Enough words, on with the pictures.

Starting out with some long ass alu angle, cut it down into 12 15" bits.

4 lengths make a square!

And another square... Top and bottom.

Workbench out in the sun as the workshop was like a sauna. Attaching the up rights.

Up rights attached!

All done for today. The top rests on for a fairly rigid finish, supporting the un-cut motherboard tray atm. Next I'm figuring out mounts for PSU, HDDs and ODDs and whether or not it needs re-enforcing.

To tide you over, however, I'll sport you a picture of a little, unrelated mod I made the other week.

All done entirely by hand :D.

Over and out.

Hehe that was a a drill, hacksaw with a round blade, needle files then wet n dry. Took about 3 days on and off.

Woo double post.

The cube with its top on.

Add a few brackets

Some sawing, filing and sanding later.

Some hardware and a temp motherboard tray, just too see what fit where.

I'm toying with the idea of a tripple rad bracket across the back, along with a pump mount. And as you can see there's plleennnnty of room underneath for something rather cold ;).

I'm torn however, Clear or more ply for the mobo tray people?

I say go clear all over dude. You've come this far, why not go the whole whack, get the frame powdercoated and get some nice plexi in there :p

That`s basically all u want, and it`s a cracking job.

In terms of the mobo-tray, it`s extremely hard to find a cheap nice sized one in the UK - however, if u remember that £10 case that Aqua-PCS do - that tray u can see at the back slides right out.

It may not be as sexy as a LL, but for £10 ??

Great idea mate! :D and i need a mobo tray for my G5

thanks :D :p

Anyone got dimensions for the tray from them cheap-o cases?

It's cheaper to grab a sheet of acrylic still. Ive got standoffs by the million and taps too. So cost vs lazyness :). The cost of the project so far has been £0.00 btw

After some lazyness, a weekend away and some time spent on another work in progress, I got around to starting the mobo tray. Went for wood in the end as it was, well, free. Total cost is still £0.00 :p.

Still needs a hole or two and a finish on the surface.

Deliberating over whether or not to include the usual ATX switches on the case or not, as so many boards come with them built in these days.

Total class dude. Those holes for the cables look better than what you'd get off a production line

The wonders of not using a dremel

I think I might mount the ply on the inside of the cube. Cut a few notches and a few screws, should look a bit tidier. Also dream up a few gadgets for it to make it properly unique :p.

Minor update for what must have been about 3 hours work :(.
