Basic Browsing PC: Ubuntu or XP?

Evening guys
smile.gif

I have got a site (not yet launched, will be here the end of the month hopefully) and a blog (link in my sig), and am currently checking them from my main PC. Now, while this is no problem to me, it would be nice to have it seperate from my day to day rig.

The two OS's that the choice is between are Ubuntu and XP. I will be installing the essentials (AV, Firefox... yada yada yada) as well as Dropbox and Skype. I'll be storing all my imagesand files assosiated with the site on the PC too, and ideally need to access them from my main PC (Win 7).

The base specs are:

1.8Ghz Socket 468 CPU

40GB IDE OS drive (not sure if working)

320GB storage drive

1GB RAM

If I haven't been too clear, please ask me for more details (obviously telling me what you want answering).

Thanks in advance for the responses which will no doubt follow

I'd recommend Linux it can easy cope with the low RAM maybe use Lubuntu as it is a stripped down version of Ubuntu there are ways to access the Linux machine from the Win 7 one a quick seach on google can give you a wealth of answers.

Have you checked the OS drive works yet??

Ubuntu uses the power a lot more efficiently and therefore you will find it a lot smoother to use and won't really notice the low spec of the machine.

I use Ubuntu on an old Pentium D laptop of mine and love it.

This. I use the remains of a PC I bought six years ago with Ubuntu on it. I wanted to learn how to use linux and of all the flavours I have tried, Ubuntu broke my brain least in the beginning! I also have a very stripped down old laptop running ubuntu from a flash drive, as a digital photo frame. It works well on minimal spec systems.

ubuntu is a great gui interfaced OS, if you have some specialized hardware

might take a bit to get it functional. XP is a powerhouse, widely accepted, but EOL

will make it obsolete as support is fading and most are opting for the win7 soon 8.

specific browsing and email, ubuntu is my choice,
