Backspace Got Your Key

I was joking around when talking to a lady friend on Facebook tonight about the chat feature of the floating bubbles when someone is typing a message. I noticed she had typed something and the bubbles stopped but there was no response. I made the comment of did your backspace get your key. Shortly she asked what does that mean. I told her that on FB that you can see when someone is typing a message, but the bubble goes away when they are done typing. I lightheartedly asked her if she had ever typed something and then decided to hit the backspace and erase it without sending it. We all have done it at one point or another. That's when she said no, I was only delayed. After a while, she says you know, I think I am going to have to start typing faster. Since you pointed that out, I feel really self conscious when I am chatting with someone now.

This made me think, what does everyone else think about the disappearing floating type bubble in chat when there is no response. Have you ever though about what that person is thinking or want to say? Could the be telling you of a repressed love, or just what a tool you really are. Does the floating bubble bring up feelings of anticipation when you are excited to be chatting with other person. Does it bring up dread when its someone you really don't what to chat with, but they know you are online and will message you anyway. How do you really feel when you know someone is typing out their thoughts, but does not send them right away or at all.

It's like when you're halfway through a text and they text back and then you have to delete your message and start again to answer the new one.

Personally I don't mind it but it should be an option that you can turn off if you want. I think it probably creates awkward conversations and moments that don't need to be.

Usually I find it's in the context of 'I was going to tell you to go ... but then I thought better of it. /backspace'

The chat bubble does not necessarily mean they are directly responding to your messaging, it just means that they are typing which could also be in responce to someone else in another chat window. It's just how failbook messaging service works, I don't have any thoughts on what they are thinking or what they could have typed, I'm of the mind set that if I have a question I'll ask it and if someone asks me something I'll reply.

That's not how it works actually. You can test it by typing to yourself (yes you can send messages to yourself). It only works if they are typing in the chat window that is observed.
