ATI 5870x2 Poses For A Picture

I like those cases. Only thing that hold them back, well it did previously, was the fan noise. Very very loud.

Hope they've done something about them. The "hamster on a wheel" type of fan really has been sheet.

Well I'm happy to report that the sample that we tested (albeit not an X2) was actually not all that loud during gameplay and whisper quiet at idle thanks to those low 2D mode clocks and voltages. :)

Sounds promising Mul.

Can u run the gpu at 100%, or really that's not necessary - just turn the fan to 100% and check back ?

If I recall correctly, fan speeds could be manipulated by means of a slider in ATi's Catalyst Control Center. It's fairly crude though and only allows for a fixed RPM rather than the ability to apply xx% fan duty at x celcius and so on. At full pelt, the fan is no doubt quite loud but in a case with sufficient airflow, this shouldn't be a necessity.

I haven't got a 5870 on me nor even a suitable testbed (back to uni with just my ITX PC right now) so I wouldn't be able to confirm that. I am very sure that I saw a fan speed slider in the Overdrive tab.

Why would there not be a fan controlling feature in the CCC?

Most/All recent cards have the feature. I don't necessarily see anything different about this one.

I'm testing a 5870 at the minute. The CCC does indeed control the fan and it is indeed loud on full tilt. However the cooler is fully enclosed this time around and is quieter than previous gen. For more you will have to read the review.

If you up it :D

The 5870X2 is a very tempting proposition due to how happy I've been with my 4870X2.

I've owned 2 GTX295 and they caused me no end of trouble.

That said I still do like Nvidia and what they do, so I'll probably wait for their flagship single and dual chip cards before making a choice.

Don't like dual cards myself, flimsy sli or xfire.

I reckon around early-mid november til any GT3xx raises it's head.

News is practically non existant. Any news seems to be old stuff and made up.

Being October this week, a month or so as opposed to dumping hundreds into something u may regret.

Precisely... Def waiting.

That said, this gap seems longer between the releases than normal. It was a similar situation last year but I don't remember it feeling like 2 months between ATI and Nvidia releasing.
