ASUS have really separated their various iterations of the Maximus VIII into distinct types, and we have two takes upon the Maximus VIII Extreme to review today.

ASUS Maximus VIII Extreme and Extreme Assembly Review

My Maximus VIII Extreme Assembly was delivered 2 hours ago, currently building the new beast.. First impressions of the board is very impressive. Can't wait to see what this thing can do.

Is it just me or does it look like an 24 pin, where normally an 4 pin or 8 pin power cables goes to the CPU?... (Yes, I've totally brainfarted right now, so completely messed up how to explain this...)

@Slider - Another "Svenne" in here then! :p

MSI don't care about making nice looking Motherboards
IMO all they care about is making stupid looking Motherboards "Cough Godlike Cough"

The thing is though from a modders perspective oem aesthetics are meaningless, when people look past that the hardware is the important part and the godlike has really great specs if were honest, ok it's no perfect 10 but that's not a major prob and it's easily fixed.

Asus do tend to hit the nail on the head when it comes to boards people want, the Maximus is no exception they are gorgeous boards.

Nope i will never let it go i maybe one of the best motherboards ever made but IMO it still has a stupid name to go with a stupid price tag here.

Actually it's two 4 pin connection for maximum overclocking.

I personally have an Asus X99 motherboard in my own rig, however i wouldn't say MSi boards were ugly or "stupid looking".

If I were building a Skylake build I would certainly consider the MSi Z170A Gaming M7:

Complete with silly dragon.

I'll pass. If that dragon wasn't there it would be far more appealing to me but MSI just love tacking on something for everyone. But it turns out not every one likes the same things.

Nope i don't like MSI motherboards at all, To me they're ugly & stupid looking.

Well i'm not really a fan of Red/Black motherboards anymore i had one and when it comes time to change this i'm going with a Black/Grey motherboard.

Sorry for the necro. The Extreme Assembly has just been priced here (Aus) at $989.00 so about $200 aud premium over the 'vanilla' Extreme VIII.

How does the DAC rate in terms of quality versus a Schitt Magni/Modi or similar? Might be worth the extra. Also and sorry if it's covered in the video I can't watch due to work restrictions but is the DAC able to run on any motherboard or is it some kind of proprietary system? I can see a six pin PCI power and some other connector so just wondering if it's restricted.
Cheers

They are only making 500 Assembly Editions and a good 100 of them are probably review samples or sponsor samples so that basically doesn't exist anyway except at an insane price for a short period. So that just leaves the 980Ti Matrix Platinum with an accent colour that doesn't really match anything, an uncontrollable RGB load indicator and a shroud that doesn't really fit the cooler. The Lightnings performance award finally makes sense, that had been bugging me for months.

Wow, that red MSI mobo is a total monstrosity. At least the old RoG didn't use a horribly glossy red like that.
