ASUS X399 ROG Zenith Extreme Alpha Preview

I'm looking forward to the full review of this. I was kinda disappointed that ASUS didn't have a new top-tier board for Threadripper 2nd Gen.

Nice looking board, im sure it does a whole lot better then the first one given the size of that new heatsink!

But really Asus, more little annoying fans huh..

I think as we head into the future you will have to get used to that. Gigabyte did a board once where the VRM sinks were on a "pci" sorta card that screwed into your case, UD7, IIRC.

Now unless the form factor changes after this many years I would expect to see stuff like that again with these very high cored CPUs. If you think back to how a GPU looked 20 years ago? (some tiny little single slot thing) and what we have now (up to triple slot behemoths) then yeah, things will have to get bigger to cool more.

Yeah i remember that board, as well as boards with Nvidia chipsets and having a big fan on the north bridge.

However Msi has already shown that you can design a proper 16 phase heatsink without a fan on x399 and Asus just seems to not want to move away from them, small little fans can be annoying as hell and instead of making space for the fans, they could have added more surface area for the heatsink and it would have looked just fine as well.

Aren't the fans optional like the Sabertooth etc?

The Ultra Gaming II needed this..... ;)

My little Crosshair VII is feeling very small right now. Liking the look of this beast, feel a Lian-Li PC-O11 build + 2950X build brewing in my head :)

I wish that they would throw in a 4xM.2 card with PCIe X8 or x16 to make up for the loss of U.2, and no PS/2 port for my Steelseries keyboard but other than that full marks for putting a design stake in the ground!

Any hint of price? North of €500 / £500 but under €750 / £750? perhaps, please? :)
