ASUS ROG Z390 Maximus XI Gene Preview

ROG Gene. Sounds like some one who would hang out at the Blue Oyster.*

I love small form factor builds. Imagine this puppy in Hex-Gear R40 with some nice tubes, and fancy cables. And i still don't know why mATX hasn't becoming a standard. ITX could be expensive to make, because you are cramming a lot of stuff into small space. mATX is just right. It doesn't have to be this high-end, but decent VRM, 2 RAM sticks, all the connectivity, one PCI-E. Joyous. This is what 90% of the "regular" builds have.

I have a question for you Tom. Do lanes for dimm.2 m.2 drives both come from CPU? It says in the manual that 2 on board come from PCH. That is clear. And when you connect first one on dimm.2 PCI-E is switched to 8x. But nowhere is stated how the second one on dimm.2 is connected. It seems wasteful to have one connected to CPU lanes and other to PCH, and not use 4 perfectly fine CPU lanes. If you can't answer it now because of NDA, can you please check it for main review. Tnx.

I guess my Gene VIII just got the boot from home...

Had hoped they would revive the Gene and Impact (guess not so for that little one), look forward to the full review Tom and all.

99% of rigs don't have SLI. So there is no point. And also there is dimm.2 from CPU, probably in preparation for Intel's 380GB 905p m.2.

I guess, but it just looks like a bigger ITX board to me. All you get from mATX to ITX is a bigger board? My old Rampage 4 Gene had three full PCIE slots in mTAX format. Christ, I can do triple SLI in that thing at 8 / 8 / 8, two way at 16 / 16. But that was back in the days before Intel decided to "segment" (ie "rip off") the enthusiast market.

Maximus XI Apex wasn't announced. So with 2 RAM slots, 2x8-pin power, bigger VRM than hero, FS fan connectors, and LN2 mode it is probably meant for pro overclocking. Pro overclockers don't use SLI on Z platform. Less traces on the board means better performance at the edge of stability.
