Asus ROG STRIX GTX 1080 A8G - OC mode?

Evening all! I have been watching Tom's video on the Strix (excellent video that one, thanks Tom!!) and there's mention of the OC mode. I presume that needs to be enabled via GPU Tweak II? But what if I opt not to use GPU Tweak II and just let the card OC itself via GPU Boost; certainly that would work just as fine, if not better? Basically that's what I have done with the EVGA card.

It will boost yes but the OC mode will boost slightly higher because it would have a higher voltage preset and the Fan's will spin higher. Manually doing this yourself will still yield better clocks

Cool, cool. So if I wanted to be lazy I'd need to download GPU Tweak II to enable it.

Yes correct. Very easy to do, even I managed to do that and that should say something

Trust us. We know^_^

On a serious note though, I really really really really really hate GPU Tweak. 1 or 2. Literally terrible software. Always buggy and slow and even when I had a Strix 470 temporarily a while back, it would cause my games to crash. No matter what I would do with manually OCing. Once I uninstalled it and used MSI AB. Problem went away. So just be aware of that. Hopefully it works for you

Thanks man! That does not sound appealing at all. I was just reading up on Tweak and also found it has no OSD (other than when using Xsplit (no thank you)). Seemingly Tweak sets your power limit to 110% with the Strix so I'll just go ahead and use AB and set the power limit myself should I need it.

Did not know that... Thanks for the headsup though, will definitely keep that in mind.

GPUT didnt set my powerlimit to 110% - that was all still manually tweakable

It just changes the baseclock a bit - they dont need power for that. If youre willing to use AB then GPUT is no different. Just set it up how you want and save it - set it to start with windows but not pop up. Simple. Just like youd have to with AB unless you want to fiddle with the bios and save the settings directly to the card

Thanks for the clarification! I'll go with AB because I like the OSD, which lacks in GPUT.

Could someone help me understand Aura better?

- Tried getting white by pushing the left slider all the way down, the right one all the way up. Result is purple and blue.

- Then there's the installation itself; nowhere is it found in my programs list. All it gives is an icon that installs it again and again when clicked.

- There seems to be no way to save your colour; after a reboot/cold boot it's back to default.

Weird software this Aura ha ha!

I have the 1060 version of that card and Aura works fine, maybe uninstall and reinstall the AURA software again. Mine by default was installed here: C:/program files(86)/ASUS/AURA(GRAPHICSCARD)

Where did you downloaded yours from, and which file? I went with the newest one, aura GPU installer. Does it remember your colour and load aura with Windows? I installed it 2x now by the way, must be an error on my end.

It seems to be working now (the red anyway, still need to try and find white). I deleted the shortcut on the desktop (I don't like icons ha ha) and wham; I cannot start Aura again as it's not in the programs list, but it is when I browse the SSD. I'd think that a giant like Asus would be able to make a friendlier piece of software ;)
