Asus Maximus VII Hero or Z97-Pro Gamer?

Hi guys,

I'm in the process of choosing the parts for a new gaming rig for my brother and was planning on setting up a Core i7-4790K with an Asus Maximus VII Hero. However when I started going through the specs of the Z97-Pro Gamer, most of them seemed to be similar to the Hero to some extent, and some even looked better on the z97-pro gamer like the include amp, sound to noise ratio, and SATA express port.

I've been away from the scene a while so I'm trying to catch up with all these new storage connection and protocol methods for SSD so I don't know what the impact would be on the long run of not having an express SATA port on the Hero (e.g for upgrades, etc). And in terms of the sound I don't think there are detailed reviews on the differences between these boards, so I'm not sure if there would be audible differences between the two.

Anyway, the main purpose of the PC is for gaming and it will be overclocked, so if you guys can give us some advice on which board is the best to go with that would be great.

If its going to be overclocked, then it should be the Hero you look at as it has more options in it to finetune the overclocking to get it running stable, the power delivery components, eg capacitors, the chokes etc are all of higher quality components than the Z97-Pro to produce a better / smoother power delivery to the CPU.

As for the audio, I've not tried the Z97-Pro gamer board, but it will either have same, or less than the Hero as the ROG is the top line of Asus boards, so you can expect them to go all out on what you get.

If you are going all out on the top of the line of 1150 CPU chips, you should really look to matching that with the board. If you was going to use the 4690K, then I would probably recommend the Z97-Pro Gamer instead.

As a user of the Maximus VII Hero with a 4790K, I can only say that the options available for overclocking are astounding, and have let me get stable overclocks (I use 4.6GHz on daily basis, but up that to 4.9GHz when needed, eg video conversion or 3D rendering), and I have never had any issues with this board since the day I got it.

I got the mobo not long after it's release, and the CPU, outside of the reviewers, I was in the first batches of them to be recieved by normal end users in UK, and I haven't ever had any issues with the combination of the two (the Hero seems to of been designed with the 4790k in mind as it's main target CPU for the end user to use).

Thanks for the reply mate, I think I will go with the Hero - it seems to be a pretty solid board with good overclocking potential.
