ASUS Maximus III Formula - First look

Damn that mobo looks the nads.

Would like to take the oppertunity to welcome Peter Stober to the team, he is on a trial for one of the Full Time news positions. Best of luck Peter certainly a good NDA start ;)

this board is gunna end up the same price as a high x58 board so whats the point of the p55 extreme boards when you can just go x58/i7 lol

Good luck Peter

Do they have enough ports though! (Atleast IDE & Floppy have died at last =P)

Congrats Peter, good job! :D

The motherboard lineup for LGA1156 is looking better and better by the day. The Maximus III Formula board looks to have a lot of promise, though I for one would think twice if it's pricing is similar to entry level to midrange LGA1366 boards. Then again, the Maximus/Striker/*insert any other top end product line* was never really my scene. :)

The on the fly overclock via another rig to me looks the bomb, benchers and enthusiasts alike are going to love this feature.

Just wait for all the other manufacturers to copy.....

Agreed, It will be like formula one where you plug in a laptop to diagnose a problem.

OMFG that board is the shizz.

Surpasses the Bloodrage no?

Some say it looks like it but I think they are completely different, just both red and black.

They will no doubt copy. I wanna see what sort of difference it can make too.

Thanks. I have to agree the 1156 lineup is looking very good, low priced boards again, hooray! :D

Thanks. I thought that, insane number of SATA ports. IDE and floppy gone is a good move too, although it seems it will only happe on the high end boards, the low end gigabyte and MSI are keeping IDE.

It won't cost that much, this will cost around the same as a mid priced X58, which is normal again considering high end P45s and stuff were £150-£200.

Looks an interesting mobo to say the least.

Love to see how the cooler interaction goes around the cpu. Looks like cap-heaven around there.

Great idea to just leave the legacy stuff behind. Some questional placements of sata ports, previously being told the memory was moved to make it less awkward to switch out when a gpu is in... well what about these sata ?

Want to see some details on the SATA connections. It does sound like a "well we aint got SATA3, but...", however it looks to be 6 normal and others on another controller like jmb. (probably totally wrong, or a new jmb revision, but if it is it'd be likely the other manufs will have them b4 sata3) --- EDIT: other manufs are including marvell 6g controllers, so this could also.

Never been a big fan of ASUS mobo layouts, but this one does look pretty easy on the eye.

Yeah I can see them doing that. The thing about it tho is that it's replacing/in place of, the simple external on-the-fly oc'ing module that ASUS previously touted about. The pc, another pc, merely being a method of comunicating the serial commands. And a fancy gui. These panels have been around for a fair time, not uniquely to ASUS. Their method assuming the user will have another pc, I would assume their panel they have would work also ?

I will probably look to get a P55 at some point, so the results of this hammering should be interesting. Chances are I'd w8 til there was something more worth the outlay like sata3 and usb3, but it can't be that far away.

C'mon with the full review already :p

One thing I don't like is the riser sound cards... I thought it was a good idea when I bought my Maximus Formula but it turned out to be a pain in the arse! Just getting in the way and making pass through on a GTX295 a right pain if using an dedicated X-Fi.

Other than that, It does look rather tasty.. Only problem is, it wouldn't go with my case :(

wouldnt this high end p55 use a nf200 chip too run full x16,x16,x16 ? im sure msi have the nf200 chip on there highest end p55

edit: im more into the msi boards tbh i dont really like the maximus III

That MSI board is extremely nice too and something I'll look at as I'll have to go Blue I think... WS Evo P55 please!

MSI sounds real nice.

I'm liking some of these manufs using the Realtek ALC889a sound system, it was very good last time I checked it out.
