ASUS GTX780Ti DirectCU II OC Review

I still stick by my belief that asus are becoming lazy in terms of GPUs. The 290/290x is crap as far as 290s go for example. I don't know if I have too high an expectation from asus but I was expecting more.

I think you are, can only do as much as the core will allow. Short of making a new GPU they couldnt have done any more to try and polish the 290 & 290X

This is a great card but the stock clocks are lower than the mental fast ones we have tested and the silicone lottery was not shining in our favor with the Ti

Never the less its still cheaper than the £600+ ones that we have looked at and still a mental fast card.....

They could've made a cooler that wasn't the 780's one ;).

I'm sure if they do a platinum version it'll be amazing. I'm tempted to say that MSI have the market sector that the normal DCUII cooler used to take.

If they made a new cooler every time the price would rocket....

Yeah I know this its pretty obvious that is the case however others did a better job. Surely the flagship of each generation of 'card, be it Nvidia or AMD, should have coolers designed or at least modified around the card in question. Prices would be a bit higher, but if you're getting the flagship 'card you're not going to worry about price that much. Obviously it'd be unfair to expect them to do what GPU specific brands do (e.g. Sapphire, Gainward) and come up with a cooler that performs excellently across the range of chips. I'm sure if they do some super powered 'card it'll be amazing as I said earlier its just the DCUII isn't as good as others and with Asus being huge players you'd expect more.

If only Sapphire did their Tri-X cooler for the 780Ti, that I would like to see.
The Tri-X is the best non ref cooler for the 290s as it stands, they are a good 10*c cooler than the Giga, MSI and Asus non ref 290s and just as quiet.

I agree Asus have lost their way, before my 290 every other card I have had has been a DCU or DCUII but compared to the other cards they don't seem to be doing as well lately.
They even used this version of this DCUII cooler on the 290, I understand them usining the same one on the 780 and 780Ti because there is next to no difference, but its not the same for the 290. :\

Most of the others do exactly the same fella. Make a good cooler once not lots of half arsed versions.

The DCUII cooler is actually very good at what it does.

For the 770/280x and the previous gen cards I'd agree, I fell in love with my mates DCUII 660s when I built his rig. The higher gen cards I don't think are that good on the scale of things. Probably because there is alot more fully designed custom 'cards for the high end.

Yep, it is still a good cooler no doubting that, just compared to the rest of the manufacturers the DCUII cards don't seem to be as good as they used to.
They are still good cards and there is no major reason not to buy them, it's just that the other non ref cooled cards seem to be doing better lately.

Especially with AMD. Best gen so far for custom coolers imo.
The green team also have it good, nice to see that the Gainward is getting popular. Also inno3D's iChill 780 is my currently my fave 'card. I have one permanently sitting in my basket on overclockers. I've had my wallet out soo many times.

Not tested that one, the older ones were not what I would have called quiet though

Well guess I'll be sticking with my reference 780 Ti, Gets better fps according to your graph ^_^

*EDIT*

Is there a video by chance or is this card a written review only ?

BTW Tom, it's nice to see comparisons between non-reference cards and the one that's being reviewed, since we normally end up buying non-reference cards anyway.

You're one of the few (the only?) I see to do this. :p

As for the card, I have the regular 780 DCUII, and it performs quite well for me. It's nice and silent when it's idle but it could probably do with being a little quieter under load given the temperatures in my case are normally in the mid 60's, maxing out at 70C. Still, it leaves room for a custom fan profile.

Good review as always...but

I like the review, but it would have been great if the vrm temperatures were also tested. Asus allow vrm temps to be monitored now, and this card like other high end Asus cards seem to report high vrm temps (by both software and hardware probes).
