ASUS GTX 1080 Strix Review

I have to say I'm impressed! Right from the beginning I was very negative about this card due to the issues with the 980 Ti version with the sagging and the cooler design. It seems ASUS fixed that with this version and the 2 x PWM headers are a godsent!

It's certainly a card I will consider now, even though I did say I was probably going for the EVGA GTX 1080 Hybrid, I'm really not so sure anymore. Granted a hybrid version of the Strix would have been lovely, but in the end water cooling is just a luxury thing and it's something I can always consider adding later on with an EK block and Predator AIO to keep things simple.

I personally prefer the look of the previous Strix, but the fact that this is truly RGB makes it a lot more enticing. I'm looking forward to seeing what ASUS do with AMD Vega in this Strix DC3 version. That should be a lovely update.

Great review TTL. You put in a serious amount of work in your reviews. I must admit I was hoping for greater overclocking headroom. We might be seeing the ceiling on the GTX 1080 cards already.

Pretty impressive numbers especially next to the Nedvidia Flanders Edition, I'm looking forward to seeing more 3rd party offerings now.

Was there ever a noise section?

All in all it was very underwhelming for me personally. Expected a lot more from the shrink..

I like the efficiency, mostly because it provides lots of headroom for future cards (1080ti) to perform in without melting our PC's.

It seems silly / sad to me, that the makers of the power handling parts and the cooling did not seem to have seen the memo on this. These parts look like they belong on power hungry 980ti and not the new super lean GPU.

I was like hm.. ya and the price is ok(619), but then i had a look at online retailers and fell of the chair ^.^, why would you pay 660 if you can get evga or msi AIO for 20 quid more which will offer better cooling and performance... a bit pointless.

Some people just don't like AIOs.

Air coolers are also a tad more straight forward to install etc.

Is there ever going to be a case where you retest some of the older stock versions of GPU's, to get some reference points to the graphs? The difference between 1080 designs will most likely be small in comparison, but if you compare it to say reference 780 78ti 980 980ti and 1080 people will be able to see exactly what upgrades do.

Just my 2 cent:D

Too bad. That would be very useful for all the people that are not using the newest possible cards.

Personally, I have no need for 10 variants of GTX980ti. or 10 GTX 980's.
I'd gladly exchange 80% of those for the inclusion of
1 x 680
1 x 780
1 x 780ti

Adding these, would mean the reviews made sense to more people then just owners of 9xx GPU's.

GTX970 are on the list. But not overly much so, considering the massive success the card have had. But 1-2 or plenty when you want to see how it fares against a new card.

Look at the other graphs dude.... We have a lot of info in ours.

great review dude, but i'm going to wait for the titan irrelevant :p

jokes aside testing for coil whine was very helpful for a lot of us watercoolers :)

I get what you are saying, but I also dont see much point. You are saying you want a review to compare a 1080 with e.g. a 970reference which you currently own pretty much or cards similar to yours.

Then why not download some benchmarks and run the test yourself with a 970 and use them to compare? Heaven, Valley, etc these are free downloads.

Just to test one card and give a detailed analysis takes a stinking amount of time so I cant see how reviews have time to do it. Plus after seeing TTL's other half being a real nice bit of eye candy, I would be insane to spend time with GPUs and not "mah woman" ;)

Great review loving the new charts and games added to the benches. I much prefer this to the 980 strix design.

My floundears edition hit 2.169Ghz core and 11ghz memory so I don't think it's that bad of a card :p
