Asus eee

Hi all

After seeing it flashing up in the advert reel on the side of the screen I'm still pretty interested in getting on. Anyone here got one or used one ?

I'm looking at it for internet use etc and light typing and work on the train kind of thing. Might head for the 2 gig sized version to save on it a bit considering flash drives are so cheap. Any thoughts?

Cheers guys!

I am holding aout for the 9" version. Expecially since it is the same size. Also I don't think the resolution on the 7" would cut it.

Good point Tox, I've got an Creative mp3 player and an external HDD so don't really need that much storage space on the machine itself. The resolution is 800 * 480 but thats not too much of a bother for me. I've got an external dvd drive at home aswell so could throw anything (windows etc) onto it. Was thinking of burning some money on w/cing my rig but I think this might be a bit better value :)

Cheers!

EDIT:

9 inch eee

The 9 inch does look promising but might pump the price up too much to be reasonable for its gadet status IMO. Shame we get so badly ripped off based on US rrps.

To me you cant do much on them - internet (on a small screen) and word process on a very small keypad. My programming tutor at college has one. He wont shutup about it - shame he cant do like any of his work on it so he doesnt bring it in haha xD

I bought a 2G eee (700) on a whim, because YES they are INEXPENSIVE. :)

I think it's a great little machine! But I would recommend AGAINST getting the 2 gig version. Because you will spend a lot of time getting Ubuntu installed - it takes a little bit more than 2 gigs, so you will have to either make your own install image, do some tweaking with the installer or install part of the OS on your flash card (I got a 2g flash card for 12$ and installed /usr on it, sometimes I have to reboot a couple of times because the flash drive doesn't boot in the correct order).

Also don't expect to do a lot of typing if you have fat fingers. I actually like the keyboard, I can get some work done but I always hit the caps lock key accidentaly... Also there's no led to show the caps is on. And I've got some trouble getting the right keymap to get the french accents right, but that's just my local problem I guess. :)

I modded mine with a touch screen, very difficult but I had fun doing it. I lost a screw and the screen casing doesn't close quite right, but it works, so I'm happy. :)

So... I bought mine for 250$, I now have a *real*, mobile computer I can take to all my meetings, get email, swap files, get a bit of work done, but if I had to redo it I would buy the 4G model. Also, note that the batteries are only good for 3 hours on the best of days. And you WILL want to mod it/tweak it, it comes underclocked to 600 Ghz, for what is actually a 9ghz processor, etc. etc. The basic Xandros OS installed with it is, shall we say, a bit backwards, but if you install Ubuntu or others you will have to hunt down fixes for the battery, wireless and others.

Anyway, hope that helps. :)

You have me interested now! You modded it with a touch-screen? Can you show a vid or something of the mod working? If it's good I'd love a guide, eee-touch sounds awesome!

Also, 9ghz proccy underclocked to 600mhz? Say what?!

I think he means 900mhz :)

I've been having a snif around (far too hungover for lectures today), I've even seen vista on one on youtube, I'm not using my vista right now, so maybe... :p

I think the SDHC storage function is pretty important for keeping the little SDD drive uncluttered. Memory upgrade looks another easy enough option if it has any trouble with windows etc.

Next student loan comes in after easter, saved a little bit this term so I'll take a punt on it after easter.

EDIT: Pretty extensive autopsy linky
