The C90 is available as barebones, has the ability to overclock by 20%, enhanced cooling, easy access to components, a standard LGA775 socket, upgradable graphics card, a decent array of connectivity AND the option of HD-DVD or Blu-Ray...
Awesome lappies indeed but not much of a DIY notebook if it doesn't come as a barebones system (case/screen/mobo). And it looks like it uses standard mobile gfx cards, couldn't you put something better than an 8600GT in it?? Oh yes a comment on the cooling system, I think it looks pretty good, and I bet it works a friggin' treat which is important in a lappy with overclocking capabilities but 4x40mm fans? Can someone say annoying x 10??
I think you pay a premium for the novelty factor - perhaps when/if this becomes mainstream then you will see other laptop manufacturers offering barebones laptops at more resonable prices. Exclusivity costs.
Seriously, look at the source article again...
You can expect to pay about $1500 for this as a barebones unit but Asus will also be selling fully configured versions that will no doubt be significantly higher.
Uhmmmm, this isnt the first time this has been done There are plenty of options that have been around for years for DIY laptop builders, at MUCH more affordable price points than this.
I bought one at cyber power pc .com and it was bARE BONES MAYBE 960 BUT I GOT 2GB ddr2 RAM 2.4GHZ INTEL DUAL CORE AND A GEFORcE 8600M GT 512mb ddr3. i got it RUSHED AND 3 DAY SHIPPING FOR $1,741 with a case (IT HAD TO BE HERE BY COLLEGE) BUT ITS DECENT BUT T STILL HEATS UP. ALSO IT only HAS A 6 CELL BATERY AND IT RUNS A DESKTOP PROSESSOR. IT gETS BAD WITH NO AC, RUNNING IT ON A 90 DEGREE Day it gets over 112 degrees on the surface of the laptop. it also only gets 1 1/2 hours of battery life. but i still like it. id run xp pro on it vista stinks.
