ASUS 8800GTS problem

Hi guys,

got a bit of a problem with my 8800GTS using the dvi connector on the card and my samsum 940BW 19" Widescreen! basicly no matter how i set the resolution the screen always seems out of focus. its as if the screen is defaulting to a standard (non widescreen) resolution even though its recieving the correct 1440x900 widescreen signel.

i'm using the latest drives for both the screen and from nvidia, and i have also tested the screen on an ATI Radion Saphire 9550 using the dvi socket, and everything is fine?

anyone got any ideas whats causing this?

also fire any more questions at me if you need any more info about my setup. i've probally missed something out that you need to know.

Thanks in advance :)

Oh,

i've reacently tried using a DVI-VGA converter, with good results. however i'd like to use the DVI socket if possible.

why make a card with DVI sockets if they dont work without a converter??

Thats what i thought. but i know its not the screen as i've had it running off a DVI socket from the ATI 9550! its very strange!

so no suggestions then?

Only thing i could think of is the refresh rates are set wrong at that rez?

Also what drivers are you using?

Go through the nVidia settings ala *thinking* u`r monitor input settings, and there`s something in the advanced section about detecting or wizard setup or something. It should name u`r monitor by it`s model etc.

There is a means to do it, we just gotta remember/think about it lol. Not easy from work with nothing at hand.

I know exactly what your porblem is. I used the latest drivers from nvidia and my screen was out of focus. All i did was go to nvidia's website and put in my info and it comes up with the driver. Here's the link that came up for your card, http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp_2k_158.22.html. Hope this helps. Make sure you uninstall the old drivers before you install these.

Do u think that it could have been just cos u re-installed the drivers, with a clean ? Or did u try that with the latest ones ?

Ok, few things to answer here it seems.

refresh rate could be the problem, i'll try using a few different settings and see if it makes any differance tonight (at work atm!).

as for drivers i am using the latest release (uk internationl version) not the default american ones. i have also tried the 8800GTS specific one linked to above, as well as the latest default driver (usa i think), all with the same results. first driver install was the latest version downloaded from nvidia, and since then i have always removed the previous drive before trying a new one.

so at the moment its looking like the refresh rate is the problem.

thanks for the help

will get back to you once i get home if the refresh rate settings make a differance.

I had the latest drivers and realized i couldn't use my max res. So i went to nvidias website and got the drivers that were recommended for my card. I uninstalled the old driver then installed the new and it worked great.

Try what i did and im 90% sure that it will fix it. Make sure you uninstalled the driver completely.

Small update about the TFT today.

Had a chance inbetween packing up my room to swap the VGA adapter and cable over for the DVI. Checked my refresh rate settings and had the option between 60MHz and 75MHz, tryed both setting in combination with the 1440x900 max resolution with no luck. everything still nice and out of focus.

I'm pretty sure i tried the driver suggested above, but i'm not 100%. so i'll give it a go when i get back from work today! why would nvidia remove functionality from a newer driver release however? doesn't seem right! but i'll give it a go anyway and get back to you tomorrow.

Thanks for all the help guys.

nVidia haven't removed functionality mate, I have used 8800GTS, 8800GTX, 8800Ultra, 8600GT and 8800GTS all with latest drivers and all work 100% perfect over DVI

Didn't think they would remove functionality, i guess its just an incompatibility between that specific screen and the card! i cant see how switching to an older driver would make any differance! i'll try it tonight anyway, but cant see it making any differance.

will peobally just have to make do with the vga converter.

anyway i'll be back with results tomorrow

there are issues with flat panel scaling in most of the latest drivers with 8 series cards but i don't see how that would affect DVI and not VGA? :S especially on desktop only at native resolution.. makes no sense :(

Tis very strange indeed! i'm stumped too!:eh:

if anyone wants any more info about my setup feel free to ask? i would like to use dvi if possible.

Neh, kenzie if they ever remove functionality in anyway, it`s often for the older generation of cards.

Seeing as u`ve done the gfx drivers thing, I`d be tempted to go for the monitor driver option.

Usually Plug & Play Monitor works for almost all monitors fine. What u could try is going into device manager, remove all or any monitor drivers from the monitor section, and restart the pc. (on which it`ll reload the driver and maybe do something right).

Many quality monitors show up as their model instead of Plug & Play Monitor, unless u`ve recently switched monitors in someway and it`ll just keep using the drivers that are there. Going crt to lcd can cause issues if u don`t turn the pc off when u switch them in particular. Very extremely rare that it causes a severe problem tho - but it happens.

Thanks for the info Rasta,

i'll give the device manager option a go tonight when i get back from work. the TFT in question is in use on my new build, and was the first screen to be attached. i did install the samsung drivers provided before installing the nvidia drives. and the screen is displayed by model name, not as 'plug and play' like my other 19" regular TFT.

will get back with the outcome tomorrow anyway, thanks for the help.

Yea do what Rast suggested, I believe I had to do that once or twice (Although my monitor shows up as 205BW)

I used the device manager to remove all displays from the system, the restarted the system with no luck, everything showed up the way it was before. one thing i noticed is i have 5 displayes listed!?! 3 listed as 'default moniter' one as plug and play (my 19" TFT) and one as 'smasung 940BW' (The one thats having the problems, 19" Widescreen).

i only did it once however, so i'll try it a number of times as v a d e r suggests.

in other news i got my delivery of new bits from specialtech today, so i'm going to be spending most of the eveing stripping and rebuilding my rig tonight. so might not have a chance to sort the screen tonight.

anyway check my build log tomorrow for an update and some new build photos with all the new bits up and running, i just hope it all fits in my already crampt case!
