Hi

Been a while since I posted here, but I have a quick question..

I have a Asus Extreme N6800 Ultra card and I am thinking of getting another one and use them in SLi

Do I need the exact same make and model or can I get any 6800 Ultra???

Thanks

Hi mate long time no see - correct me if I'm wrong but I think you need the same make/model.

Re Asus6800

Hi,

Dont quote me on this but i think both cards must be the same due to the bios. I think on some possibly all you can flash the new identical bios onto another 6800 card. I know if you were using the bfg card this is possible as i have seen someone do this but i think with the asus is possible too! Id wait and get advice from one of the more experienced users here. Personally i like to use 2 identical cards :D

Cheers

In my days of flashing these 6800U, I found that there were more differences than just the BIOS. No matter the BIOS some cards behaved differenty to others; although I don't know if it applies to the PCIe ones.

It used to be that they needed the same bios but with new drivers I think any 2 will do. You certainly don't need the same manufacturer unless they use their own PCB layout and bios (asus often do).

re 6800s

Hi,

Is there any reason for getting a different card? If not it would be simpler to stick to 2 matching! From what ive seen as long as the specs are the same on two different pcie cards you can flash the bios to match. Hope anything ive written is useful lol.

Good Luck m8

You ever thought of selling your existing Ultra, at least £120 i dont know, but probs more, and buying a 7800gtx with the money you get from that, and what a 6800 ultra would cost. It would perform on a par in some stuff given, but in others it will completely whip a ultra sli combo, heck if you are getting the prices from scan, you could get a 512mb with the money you save

Closer to £200 I would think.

yer, i thought it may be, sorry, its just i sold a dud for £70 and presumed it would be around that or, as i say, more.

cheers gollum

Hi guys.

Thanks for the info there.. Guess I will look at the 7800gtx card. :)

Its been a while since I brought any new hardware.. Feel right out of touch with it all..

;)

I agree with benny selling the 6800 and upgrading to a 7800gtx would improve performance and there is always the option for sli setup later on!!!

LOL but that's probably what he thought when he got the 6800u. Duh. 8)

lol

Lol im sure you are right gollum. I just ment wouldnt it be better considering 1 xfx 7800gtx for instance is better than 2 6800s in sli. At least this way it makes his graphics future proof. Also he can then increase the performance even better at a later date.

Dave

7800GTX will run cooler, draw less power and give you performance probs better than 2 Ultras, so it's better all round to go for the GTX.

I wasn't arguing that the 7800 isn't a better card as it is. It just might not be as SLi upgradable as you think. By the time he needs a second card there may be a cheap single card better than SLi 7800s as with the 6800. Still I agree the 7800 is a good move from here.

Time and Graphics cards dont go well together - gollums right, those pondering an upgrade thinking about sli (or corssfire) in the future - might find that teh latest single card that is available is a more worthy investment at that time.

:D I see your point and you do have a point there! i always tend to buy things together at the same time saves these probable issues.. or does it? If say one of my 7800s packed in say a year from now and then i could not find another?

Maybe by then there will be better cards and i will upgrade:B lol

Hi Phil. Glad to see business is going well..

OK.. I will go for the 7800 card I think. But now have and few questions

1. How much do you think that I could get for my 6800 Ultra?? And anyone intrested

2. Which is the best 7800 to go for, if indeed there is a better one

3. 256mb version or 512mb version. Is there much in it between them??

Cheers again..
