Hi guys,
I have a ASUS GTX 560 Ti DirectCU II and was wondering if i should upgrade this now ?
I play first person shooters and Diablo 3 mainly but alos some racing games.

It seems to play games fine but have recently upgraded my whole system apart from this card.

My system is:

i5 3570k with a Noctua NH-D14 cooling this
Gigabyte Z77-D3H Motherboard
16GB RAM unsure of the make think its G.Skill
and the ASUS GTX 560 Ti DirectCU II
Be Quiet! CM BQT L8-730W PSU
All housed in a Fractal Design R4 Case

Never overclocked this, thats a whole new adventure for a later date seeing as i have the 3570k and the noctua in there.

So what do you think should i upgrade it and if so AMD or Nvidia and why please ?

I also have a 560ti which i've overclocked to 1ghz on the core clock. It runs everything i play BF3 etc. just fine for now so unless you're planning on maxxing out the next crysis you should be ok until the next lot of cards. That said if you do fancy an upgrade it'd be good if we could know your budget first

Hi thanks for the reply,
I would look into spending up to £350 but obviously would like to get the best for my money.
Im just curious to if i would benefit from say a 670 or a 7970 maybe a overclocked 7950

general consensus regarding bang for buck seems to be the 7950 especially considering how they overclock. as for 670 or 7970 i believe it's a bit more of a mixed bag as i think the 7970 plays better on really high resolution but if you're just playing in 1080p I personally would buy a 670.

Probably worth seeing what some of the others say but if you have the money a 670 or 7970 would obv be better than a 7950.

Yea it would be single monitor 1080p.
Im tempted with a 7950 and a move over to AMD.
Thanks for your thoughts on this

Well there`s always the thrill of a new card in a new system... :-)
For Diablo and racing your card will do u just fine. When going over to more demanding games, higher screen-resolutions and/or more screens you should consider upgrading the 560Ti.
Given a bit of time the price on the 660Ti should come down...
Your choise of Mobo best lends itself to single card solutions.

My thoughs - having said that im not a hard-core gamer/OC at all... could be other more valid suggestions.

Thanks for your opinion Lystfiskern, yea i think i messed up a little getting that board as its not really for sli.
That said i dont think im ready to move onto sli as yet, happy to stay with single GPU.
I have been playing Far cry 3 this week when i have had the time and i noticed the draw distance when flying mountains seem to just pop up in my face!!
I might try to overclock this card a little and see how that goes.

I say upgrade. I'm on a 5870 which is a little faster than your card and desperately want an upgrade. I really want max eye candy and while I can play almost everything at max settings, Crysis is in the low 30's, Metro is in the mid 30's and BF3 has to be on 2md highest settings and I can't play Batman AC or Crysis 2 with DX11 on max and get out of the low 30's.

At 1920x1080, the GTX670, GTX680, 7950 and 7970 are the cards to have as they'll AVERAGE between 50-60 fps in every game out right now at max settings. That's what I want and that's why a GTX670 or 680 is in my near future. I'm tired of AMD drivers so I'm switching to Nvidia for this round unless I can get a really smoking deal on a 7970.

hey,
i got pretty much the same system as yours, got an Asus mobo, corsair ram (1600) and scythe Kaze2 + extra fan with RV03 case.
I was going through the same thoughts as you about upgrading and i did, but not my graphics card.
if you dont already have one get an SSD, i don't get any of the sudden loading issues you describe in far cry 3.
also that asus gfx is a good little overclocker i gave mine to a friend and managed to get a stable 990mhz on the core cant remeber off the top of my head the shader and ram clocks or volts.. but none the less he is running a first gen i5 and he is able to get high/ultra settings on BF3 and FC3.
just watch the airflow on that R4 if your going to OC anything.

Thanks guys some very interesting reading here.

I have been doing a bit of overclocking using Asus GPU Tweak this afternoon.
My GPU clock will only go as far as 880MHz,my memory 4630MHz
I have not changed any voltages and have been testing with FurMark.

Looking at these results i think im in the market for a new card and possibly a 7950 but now i see there are driver issues.

Thanks Demonking,i have 2 Corsair 120gb SSD's in here forgot to add that.

So now im down to the old AMD or Nvidia question,i have had nvidia for a good few years now but i hear lots about how good the 7000 series is for recent games.

Im going to google a bit and continue scratching my head

The AMD cards are really fast and putting up some really good numbers but read the reviews with the frame rate graphs and youll see the Nvidia cards are much more linear and smooth. HardOCP and The Tech Report both recently had reviews comparing AMD and Nvidia cards and they both ended up recommending the Nvidia cards despite the AMD cards having faster average frame rates because the Nvidia cards gave smoother frame rates and better gaming experience.

I think this is probably driver related with the AMD cards but thats just another reason to be ticked off with AMD and their drivers. This has been going on for years! No this isnt a huge deal and Im not saying an AMD card will be choppy and unplayable but for my money, Im tired of dealing with the sub par AMD drivers so Im gonna go Nvidia for me next one and thats what I recommend in the $300-400 price range when prices are comparable. Now if you can get a really good deal on an AMD card then I would opt for one I think and just deal with the crappy drivers but money aside, Id rather have a GTX.

GTX670 all day long and twice on Sunday. The MSI Twin Frozr is my personal favorite line of card. If you can afford the extra £60 then that would definitely be the one Id go for. If youre tight on cash then get the 7950 cause itll still be a great card but IMO, the 670 is the better card and worth the extra 60 quid.

I have not had a single issue with AMD-drivers since last summer. Having said that, I dont push my card with benchmarks and hi-stress oc. The 2 last updates came with som huge performance boosts.
Having said that, I am not a fan boy of either manufacturer- choose whatever u feel confident with and that has great value. For me...right now, this would be the 7950 and bundle.
BTW... R4 and cooling - no prob, but you would improve airflow wastly taking out the largest HDD case and hanging the lower HDD-case under the drive-bays and putting in another Fractal 140 SilentR2 in the front..... ;-)

I am a huge AMD fanboy and even Im growing tired of the driver issues. Even with my ancient 5870 I still have driver issues. Games like Bulletstorm have a bunch of spots where itll just drop from 60 to 30 fps then spike back up. Its very noticeable and quite a pain. This 5870 is my 3rd straight AMD card and its been like this with each of them. Its not unbearable or anything like that but it is a pain and Im thinking its time I try Nvidia for a while and see what they have to offer.

That is good to. We all have heard about AMD driver issues for years. Im just stating that for some reason I have not been greatly affected. Not saying that Nvidia always has released flawless drivers for that sake. So, I am not defending nor trying to belittle possible flaws - just conveying my personal experience.
If I were in Didds shoes, if satisfied with his choice so far with Nvidia and the 560Ti, I`d probably go for another Nvida when upgrading.

True. Like I said, the issues arent back breakers. Theyre more like little annoyances and stuff. Nothing that would stop me buying another AMD card if the price were right but for even money, Im going Nvidia next time. But I cant say for sure cause those 7970's are coming down fast in price and AMD has a very good record of dropping prices on previous generation cards when their newest line comes out so we could possibly see 7970's down to $300 or less! I bought my 5870 after the 6000 cards came out for $200. It was $400 2 months before when the 6000's hadnt been released yet! A 7970 for $280 and Ill buy it in a heartbeat and drivers be damned! :D

As soon as i got the case i took the center drive bay out and put on my shelf put the white fractal 140 from the rear and put it in the front adding a Noctua 140 into the rear,i love this case and also have an R3 for my server.

On the AMD vs Nvidia thing im veering toward Nvidia again
Just need to decide which brand to go with around the £300 mark for a 670

I hace only one issue with that MSI. http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=FiU2IXfKjfo#!

EVGA seems to be all the rage here in Norway atm. 2Gb ForTheWin and 4Gb Supeclocked hear much appraisal. Most people are also very happy with their Gigabyte 2Gb Windforce3X. For one screen 1080p u will do nicely with the often cheaper 2Gb cards. There are a few other threads in this forum for advice on a spesific model.
