Assassin's Creed Odyssey PC Performance Review

They didn't even bother to optimize the game. You can easily tell even without a benchmark simply due to the fact that they expect you to run it at 30fps on a machine that would run almost every other game at 60. And it doesn't really look any better than Syndicate or Unity which ran much better. Since the dawn of time their biggest issue has been CPU optimization. Remember Assassin's Creed 3 and how horrible the performance was due to poor CPU utilization as soon as you got to Boston? And even now, years later, it's like they never bothered to fix the underlying issue with their engine and CPU performance.

Runs fine on my PlayStation:)

TBH, when I get back to playing this game I will limit the framerate to 30 and play it at 4K on the GTX 1080 with custom settings with a gamepad.

It's a shame that recent Assassin's Creed games have so many issues on PC, as I personally think that they have taken the gameplay in a good direction. Its very Witcher 3-like, but I am enjoying it so far.

While this game is super demanding you guys shouldn't expect this game in any future GPU reviews. The benchmark is too inconsistent to get my approval. If this is addressed it could go into the maybe pile, but don't hold your breath on that.

Yeah the last good AC game was Black Flag for performance.
Half the reason why I just play on console is the performance

Consoles have the "It just works" factor. I can see why that is appealing for a lot of games. I have a PS4 Pro, but I only really use it for console exclusives.

I really hope that Ubisoft can fix the CPU issues in this game, as it is ridiculous how bad this game can run. It's hard to believe that Ghost Recon Wildlands and For Honor use the same engine.

TBH if I worked for AMD I would be ashamed to have my brand logo in this game. While it isn't Arkham Knight level of bad, it isn't exactly a badge of honour.

Well I mean it's there biggest project using this engine ever. Open world, more NPCs, etc. It's bound to have been CPU bound. Performance however shouldn't be this bad

That is true, it is the biggest game to use this engine, but being unable to stay above 60 on an 8-core processor is terribad, especially when the game appears to be making use of all of the CPU's cores/threads.

Here comes the conspiracy theories, "Intel needs this game to convince gamers to buy an i9-9900K!".

Yeah I'm surprised I haven't seen that comment yet:D

I'm sure they'll fix it. They might not get it where we expect but if it's already addressing a lot of threads it would probably just come down to the algorithm that handles the distribution of threads.

Or it may be a bug which is causing physics to be overly calculated. Like maybe some objects below the map are being processed or similar issues.

Syndicate ran pretty well. It's as mediocre as a game can get, but it ran just fine.

Origins was plagued by the same issues. Did they ever fix Origins?

I play this title on a 7700k with 1080ti (2k ultrawide) at about 70fps (avg) max settings bar vol clouds. Seems easy to hate on something when following the internet's pitchforks but whose actually playing it?. This world is ground breaking and everything in it moves like I've never seen before in a video game. Personally I'm cutting it some slack because everytime I ride a horse to a ruin at sunset or sail my ship in a lightning storm I'm simply in awe. You also need to know that just setting volumetric clouds to high is a massive gain on FPS. I recommend people to actually try the game for themselves because there is a tonne of graphical settings that be reduced to suit most cards without a huge drop in visual quality. If you don't like the style of game then that's great but I take issue like I always do when the internet mob gets it's teeth in to something without even trying it.

I'm a bit confused..

Since you say "..making use of all additional cores and threads", why then is there no difference between 8-core 16-thread, and 4-core 8-thread, on page 7?
This looks more like a (I can't believe I'm saying this) gpu bottleneck at 720p.

Any why isn't there any 1080ti, or 2080ti, or sli in the mix?

It seems this is more of a gpu problem than cpu. I'm not slating, exactly, just curious.

In that case, you are comparing the Intel processor with 4c/8th to an AMD processor with 8c and 16th.

At Ultra settings we were able to see almost identical framerates at 1080p, at those settings the game seems to be single-thread CPU limited or bounded in some other way. While the game can use more cores, the lead thread needs to be powerful enough to keep things going, CPU loads are almost never distributed equally.

Ideally, we would like to use a top-tier graphics card for CPU testing, but at the moment I only have a GTX 1080 on hand for testing. This is typically enough to showcase a trend, like how many cores PC users will need and if it benefits from more than four cores. In this case, it wasn't, which is why the game was lowered to 720p.

When it comes to extra hardware, we are working on updating our gaming test bed and graphics card test suite in the near future. At OC3D we work across the UK, I'm in Northern Ireland while TTL is in England. This prevents us from having all of the latest gaming kit in a singular location. Having a spare RTX 2080 Ti to sent to Northern Ireland isn't really an easy thing to do.

On top of that, we have DRM, the bane of any PC tester's existence. After a specific number of hardware change, built-in game DRM will typically lock us out of a game for 24 hours, which will delay reviews for publications that don't get pre-release game code.

so is AC Odyssey a worthy purchase for PC?

The game is fun, just don't expect a perfect PC version. If you can live with performance dips in certain areas then you will be fine, especially if you have powerful hardware.

It's only those who expect a steady 60FPS in all areas that will have an issue. I've been playing it this weekend at 4K 30 on a GTX 1080 and a gamepad with what are basically customised Highish level settings.

Ubisoft took more than a little inspiration from The Witcher 3 when making Origins and Odyssey, so if you enjoyed the Witcher you will probably have a good time.
