Is it any good for a friend on a tight budget wanting gaming performance and upgradability, he only has 2x 512mb (166mhz i think) but the board does not list this speed...will this be an issue?

That wont be a problem, the ram will run at 166 by default. But it will work.

Mite be a good idea to get another PC3200 stick though.

Yup just replace the PC2700 stick, you can get some good PC3200 value ram for cheap these days. Corsair comes to mind first.

specialtech do a 512mb stick for £40 (£36 with 10 % off)

probably worth gettin this board with a amd 64 3000+ instead of another skt a proccy as its faster aint it?

this vsta model is the 1 up from the 939dual thingy...does £400 sound good...from my point as well for :

amd athlon 64 3000+

asrock 939DUAL-VSTA

120gb maxtor ide hdd

msi dvd - rom

aopen cd rw

sony floppy drive

xpertvision 6600gt 256mb agp

400w psu (not sure on brand but it works fine)

512mb elixir pc 3200 200mhz ram

512mb corsair pc3200 (not sure on speed) ram (the only 512mb pc 3200 ram i could find on st, if u can find other please comment)

thermaltake tsunami

installation and support by moi :D

free windows installation and bitdefender 9 professional plus

perfectdisk 7.0 and possible tuneup utilities ;)

i hope im not at a loss for i only got it 2 years ago :p

The only diff between the 2 boards is the FSB is faster on the Vista board and theres a Future proof cpu socket (whatever that is)

he will not be overclocking at all. he has set his old computer on fire (somehow ) and instead of activiating windows he formatted it 30-40 times over the last year and now it wont boot (he wonders why)

he is a total n00b when it comes to computers (he turned antivirus off just coz he couldnt work it!) so im gonna have to fool proof it for him!

I've just replaced my board with the older version of this and I'm happy.

It doesn't suffer from feature bloat and feels very solid. It also boots very fast.

Good points for me are:

Passive (silent) chipset.

High def audio.

Adjustable vcore

sata2 ncq

optional expansion card for am2 processors

price

vga + pcie = up to 4 screens :)

Bear in mind that ddr ram is about to go out of fashion, so get some more now!

This is incredibly true, we`re at a fairly good part of market prices atm, how much they may drop further - or whether todays prices are the lowest they`ll go is possibly a gamble.

The prices will end up the same way pc133 went, still being made, by less manufacturers, but that much more expensive.

512m or really 1g of pc3200 is at a pleasant price atm.

is it actually worth it? coz the other stick is only 34mhz slower, or does the difference in pc3200 / pc2700 really affect performance?...i could let him upgrade that later on

Yeah leave it - he won't notice if you dont tell him :p

Was wondering about that Asrock board myself, if the worst comes to the worst over my A8V deluxe. Although the Asrock's ULI chipset is nowhere near as fast as the A8V's K8T800Pro.

Sounds a nice board. PCIe and AGP means I don't have to dump my 6600GT:cool:

The "Future Proof" CPU socket means that you can purchase an adapter, so you can upgrade to AM2 without changing mobos.
