an athlon 64 3000+ runs at 2GHz but is it the equivilant of 3GHz? cos i am confused is it 2GHz of raw power or does the fact it has an efficnent core make it the equivilant of 3GHz?

Yes you got that right...in Intel terms that is

amd = 9 cycles per count

intel = 6 cyckles per count

therefore..

amd = 2000mhz = 2000 x 9 = 18,000

intel = 3000mhz = 3000 x 6 = 18,000

you see how they compare??

ionicle are you not understanding anything?? yes you have a 3ghz IF COMPARING TO AN INTEL but why would you want to do that. once you get a small piece of PC knowledge you will stop comparing amd to intel and vice versa and you will take them as what they are.

Exactly.. I don't compare my Intel to any AMD.. I just know it's better haha
